Best New Indie – Anna Arboles, Scrimmage, Beach Vultures, maxime.

Anna Arboles knows to get there you gotta commit By Any Means Necessary.  Sometimes to know it and to do it are at odds.  The songwriter beautifully channels that conundrum on her new single.  The aura is gracefully conflicted.  It’s catchy in the same way we admire the struggle.  We run to these narratives within cinema and literature.  We yearn for our heroes to persevere.

On her new single, Arboles embraces that story as her anthem while honoring its impact with a smart catchy composition.  Stylistically we think it connects with fans of Clairo and Boy Genius.  It’s awesome.

Scrimmage shows their versatility on their recent Velour.  Known to us for their noisy harmonious shoegaze exploits, the band switches it up convincingly on their recent single Velour.

A psych pop delight, Velour brings refreshing eclecticism to their collective catalog.  In that way their aesthetic as a project could draw similarities to King Gizzard.  The new single is more Tame Impala than Deftones.  We dig it.

Beach Vultures new single Pocket takes on double meaning for us.  On one hand the energetic drum part is absolutely effectively in the pocket.  On the other hand the catchy melodic construct is like a cheat code in your pocket to flee to if you need a moment of escape.

The song itself has gorgeous contrast.  This is how we imagine Nirvana might have sounded within the current era of indie pop.  The writing is catchy while the singer retains an unavoidable level of melancholy.  We love it.

We love what’s happening with Canadian alt pop import maxime.  Just get a taste of their new single $101.17.  Just the title suggests an omnipresent approach to songwriting.  The production and sonic design mirrors that genius.  The artist embraces the tools available and employs them respectably.

We love how they use effects and production tools to stylize their work.  It’s so convincing that you will not desire to hear the song without them.  That intuition recalls the classic legacy of Ween with a more modern catchy groovy indie pop touch familiar to Joji and Childish Gambino. It’s sick.
