Hip Hop Discovery – Jamaal Matters, KOTH, Sorvina, Ric and Maff

Jamaal Matters decided to call his new song Outrageous flow and we’re not mad about it.  The Raleigh native knows his skills can cause a fake rapper to throw in the towel.

No need to boast, the recent track feels like a celebration for all.  It’s heard in the samples he employs.  Connecting the dots with artists like Al Green is more complex than a cool sound bite.  Like them, Jamaal Matters makes art that comes from a place of truth.  Hear for yourself.

From its first breakbeat moments you’ll find yourself bumping to the infectious appeal of Airport.  The new single from KOTH featuring Jester is stylistically rich.

Old school with attitude, the rappers embrace a percussive cadence full of vibrant inflections.  In that way it recalls the late 90s Bronx sound familiar to artists like Big Pun.  We dig it.

Sorvina flexes her eclectic ability on the recent Heaven Come To Earth.  A collaboration that features jakohitsdifferent, the new single unravels like a rap version of Crooklyn.  There’s a community sensibility to this prose.  It evolves like poetry before intersecting with the brilliant melodic sanctuary that is the chorus section.

Stylistically it recalls the legacies of Lauryn Hill and more recently Chance The Rapper. We love it.

Ric & Maff keep it real on their recent single Remember What I Am ft. Tia.  This is our kind of rapid rap ability, where the words flow legible in a way thats beautifully lucid.  It’s as if their voice is a vessel for their brains rush of inspiration.  Paired with the beat it offers a unique contrast.

The first rappers delivery is angry in a way that suggests this tirade offers some liberation, like built up anxieties finally able to cut loose.  It’s the saving grace this rap game offers.  Tia and the second rapper are notably smoother.  It’s a dynamic release.  You gotta get into it.
