Best New Rock – Margaret Cho, Wic Whitney, The Nuts, Futon Blonde

We had to look twice and scan the press release to believe it.  We’ve been wondering about Margaret Cho.  The household comedian apparently makes very credible indie rock music.  Her new single Lucky Gift is anything but schtick.  It’s absolutely epic.  The chorus slaps.

There’s nothing funny about it, though the familiarity and how it relates to her comedy will draw a smile.  Stylistically we hear an influence of Alvvays and The New Pornographers.  It’s damn good indie rock with a chorus that slaps.  We’d go see this.

Wic Whitney isn’t afraid to rifle some feathers.  He’s also relentlessly catchy in a way that smothers some charm on his risqué rhetoric.  It’s heard on his new single Punky Newster.

Its an eccentric post punk highlight were Whitney effectively bridges the gap between Cake, Parquet Courts, and The Strokes.  There’s a lot of ear candy here.  Dig in.

We love the contrast heard on Black Time, the new single from The Nuts.  The music is resistantly tamed, always threatening to break loose with spurts of polyrhythms and cut time mirages.  The singer brings some balance before losing their own inhibition in the songs infectious chorus.  The band follows in tandem.  The affect is exhilarating.

In that moment some emo rock inferences interrupt the moody rock foundation set in the verse section. Somehow they find the middle ground between Radiohead, A Perfect Circle, and Mars Volta.  We freaking love it.

We love the energy Futon Blonde brings to their new single Common Kid.  It’s absolutely infectious.  Full of conviction and just a little insane, Common Kid has all the punch needed to thrust you into a rapture.

Futon Blonde finds the middle ground between Joe Jackson or The Knack and modern indie rock projects like QOTSA.  It’s slightly nostalgic while retaining a modern edge.  Every member brings it.  The performance is crazy tight.  Nothing common about that.
