Women of Trip Hop – On The Offshore,, Dissolved Girl, Steph Sweet

We dig the vibrant fresh dark funk vibe of Circles Around You, the classic single from On the Offshore.  The singer brings a unique abstract presence to this fusion blend.  It suits the lyrics creepy contortion.  Is she friend or foe?  The music is curiously catchy, tagging a telegraphic melody while seemingly fleeting from its pull.

On the Offshore is an international, alt-pop songwriting outfit with roots in trip-hop and electronica. The songwriters of the band are bassist, guitarist and producer Girisha Fernando (Germany / Sri Lanka) and singer, keyboardist and lyricist Lucy Pereira (UK / India). They are joined by two further band members for live shows: Kilian Bühler (Germany) on drums and Riccardo Ferrara (Italy) on guitar. We dig it.

We love the dramatic build and convincing drop design of Dirty Tricks, the new single form Dissolved Girl.  The dark cinematic intro is an audio horrorscope.  When the beat drops your expectations are tharted.  What follows is dangerously hypnotic.  The female vocal performance is mysterious and sultry.  It’s ripe with erotic appeal while the singers presence within this dark musical vibe makes you cautious.  Buyer beware, the Dirty Tricks don’t come cheap.

Stylistically we think Dissolved Girl fits in well with modern Trip Hop trailblazer Amélie Swann.  Considering the producers success with Paolo Nutini, Dissolved Girl might be the next Trip Hop revival.

Steph Sweet feels daft romantic on her moody new single Tuesday Love.  The singers robust timbre suits this brooding trip hop vibe.  You can hear the genres connection to jazz lounge singers like Billie Holiday and Nina Simone.  We love how Steph Sweet adapts that influence with modern industrial and electronic production ideas.  That blend gives Tuesday Love nostalgic brilliance.  Sylistically the minimalist contrast recalls the influence of Massive Attack.  We’re into it.
