Chris Combs has spent years writing and producing for others. In the Light is his first release with lyrics and singing, and it’s a good one. The sonic attention to detail embraces the abilities that drew the attention of others who wanted him to produce their projects. The musicianship is killer and the layers are entrancing.
There’s an exotic desert rock melodic detail baked into the psych indie product. It’s got some jam flex too, like a Sting song performed by Goose and produced by Moby. Damn that’s fresh.

Kylie Rothfield won’t be denied on her new single Old Man. Her emotive longing is seductive while her lyrical revelations don’t shy away from the complications offered by this desire. Real or imagined, it’s a conflicted conscript. For better or worse Rothfield lets these words fly.
The theme is not unlikely, and in the grand scheme of things an all too common conundrum. Young girl, older guy; and two versions of how it all got started. One things for certain, the character in this story is into him. Stylistically the vibe should connect with fans of Boy Genius and even Taylor Swift. It’s smart but accessible, and with an anthemic hook that casts a wide net in the world of rock.

Loxian. That’s what Enya coined her fictional language derived from inspired yelps and unintelligible vocal scans. It’s kind of like a musical speaking in tongues. Every songwriter has a version of it when they’re looking for the words to grace an inspired riff. That burst of inspiration sometimes won’t easily evolve into intelligible prose.
Occasionally it’s better to stick with the catchy whelped improvisations. And so it is that we adore Mind Games, the new single from M@. It’s a fun psych pop banger that still lands deep and moody despite its limited wordism. It’s all about a feeling. Stylistically it’s somewhere between Flaming Lips and Tame Impala. We dig it immensely.

Jazzie Young ain’t exactly jazzy. She’s more of an indie pop darling, and she caught our attention with her new single Waiting on You! This dream pop essence recalls an influence of The Cranberries and adapts it into the modern indie credo. The layered jangly guitars shimmer as an underlayer of synths break to the surface in the songs late drum free bridge section.
Young herself blends smoothly like musical melatonin. Her affect is hypnotic and intoxicating. Stylistically she should connect with fans of ALLVVAYS and Indigo De Souza.
