Best New Rock – Meagre Martin, Pit Pony, CJ Wiley, Waves_On_Waves

Meagre Martin caught our attention with their new single In The Room.  This intriguing composition is full of subtle swing and progressive surprise.  Though unpredictable, it flows impressively and stays within itself while never hanging around an idea too long.

The full band performance erupts like one intelligent organism.  The singer charts these swings effectively, offering an addictive chorus that instantly begs for you to sing back at her.  Stylistically it’s a sure thing for fans of ALVVAYS and Boy Genius.

We love the pomp and attitude heard on Vacancy, the new single from Pit Pony.  The singer can expect to draw comparisons to Chrissie Hynde from the Pretenders or Patti Smith.  It’s a testament to her jive and jest as she bobs and weaves the bands onslaught. She’s seemingly barely effected as the band thunders around her.

Like the warped punk front person known to inspire this vibe, she stands in contempt of the bands prompts.  If you read into it, it’s rooted in their non conformist credo.  You can’t make me, but if I want to, I’ll do it. And in the final section, she does give all of herself.  Hold on for your life.

CJ Wiley has mixed intentions as the vixen heard on Don’t Die Charlie.  The production ideas throughout are consistently cool, adding to the cinematic drama and tension of the moment.  CJ Wiley is convincing as she chronicles this experience.  It’s as if she’s speaking to you.

The authenticity of her character has Hollywood potential, and she does just enough singing to land magnetic.  It’s an affect that keeps you wanting more.  We like that kind of careful grace.  Stylistically it should connect with fans of St Vincent, Florence Welch, and Lucy Dacus. It’s a banger.

Inspiration takes over On the Outside, the new collaborative single from Waves_On_Waves.  The synthwave crossover evolves into an indie champion with the help of Gothic DJ duo Crimewave.  The track is part of their new 18 song album Halloween Summer.  It’s a fun turn of the century indie centric explosion.

The drums cite a classic indie rock pattern familiar to Block Party or TV On The Radio.  The vocal has some emo pedigree familiar to how turn of the century indie rock singers were inspired by the movement.  It’s a really effective vocal performance, an asset that propels the productivity of this prolific project.  Everything he touches is going to be good, but this song is another special one in his growing canon of collabs.  It’s a hit.  We can’t wait to dig deeper into the album.
