Emerging Folk – Sam Koster, Ann Gray, Patrick Sampson, VRISKO

Sam Koster wants to know more about Before You Go.  This metaphysical aura suits the songs spiritual curiosity.  Humanity’s infinite search for truth gets illuminated on this dreamy indie folk dreamscape.  What’s revealed in those last undocumented moments?

Koster wraps this conscious plea in an indie folk vibe reminiscent of Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens, and The Shins.  The The unknown never sounded so dreamy.

Ann Gray chronicles a complicated relationship on her convincing new single Road Raging.  Her conjured vulnerability lands believable on this landmark performance.  Her voice is full of personality and character.

It’s a coming of age young adult breakthrough as Gray quarrels with all the big changes.  From the letdowns to the letting go Gray charts the memories that make it so hard to move on.  Stylistically it’s a sure things for fans of Lizzie McAlpine and Kacey Musgraves.

Patrick Sampson gets personal on his new single More Than the Moment.  The endless struggle of existence recalls the eastern proverb that life is suffering.  Sampson honors that universal trial with a soulful heartfelt performance.  It’s not all doom and gloom.  There’s comfort in this kind of spiritual deliverance.  It lands relatable.  It lands real.

“You’re gonna climb.  You’re gonna fall, and that’s fine.  It’s okay to feel everything deeply dear, just don’t let it dictate the way you live.”  Damn straight.  A sure thing for fans of Damien Rice, Glen Hansard, and Dave Matthews.

VRISKO is Simply Sad.  The clever alt folk project adapts a waltz rhythm effectively into the indie folk canon.  They mask it so well all sense of elitism evaporates.  The somber vocal drops a heavy dose of melancholy as the sadness can’t help its serene nature.

Stylistically they find the middle ground between Elliot Smith and acoustic My Morning Jacket.  We love it.
