Best New Rock – mlady, Psychic Poppies, Deafhound, Agora Sci-Fi

We got lost in the rock meets dream pop essence of Baby Water Blue, the new single from mlady.  Steeped in contrast, the new single could have adapted grunge if the singer brought a different energy.  Her serene performance blends seamlessly into this rock vibe.  It adapts the noisy moments harmonious.

The bands progressive performance embraces alternative rocks dynamic legacy.  Stylistically we hear the classic influence of Tiny Music era Stone Temple Pilots colliding with modern rock influences like Phoebe Bridges and Clairo.  We love it.

They describe their sound as “Phantom Flower Music.”  Salems Oregon’s Psychic Poppies are tuned in to what makes them tick.  An influence of Laurel Canyon collides with the dark lure of 4AD in their dynamic sound.

Their new single Something Holy tries to navigate that quarrel, where bright guitars shimmer beneath a melancholy melodic slump.  That contrast feels internally complicated.  You feel good about it but you know it took some hurt to get here.  That relatability is comforting.

We adore the explosive vibrance of Depleted, the new single from Deafhound.  A hard alternative upbringing grows a shoegaze heart on this immersive breakthrough.  Stylistically we hear an influence of Deftones colliding with some heavier emo and melodic hardcore.

The Portland buzz band describes their sound as alternative post-grunge shoegaze.  Hailing from grunges regional birthplace, the authenticity is ripe on this impressive single.

Agora Sci-Fi pens an anthem with their convincing new single portals.  This nostalgic narrative illuminates the journey’s romantic allure.  We’re talking about the journey of young aspiring rock bands.

That innocent magnetism, seduced by glory or just the opportunity to be a part of something inclusive.  Some of us are drawn by friendship, some of us are pulled in because of our creative prowess.  No matter how you get there, the come down hits hard.  We never get over it.  The stereotyped former high school Quarterback local bar mainstay is now the legacy local rocker.  God we love this song.
