Best New Rock – Clowder, Jessica Ever, Snowcuffs, Los Animales Del Sur

ever at all,” the new single from the shoegaze-inspired indie rockers Clowder, kept us hooked and on the edge of our seat like a movie or TV episode would. The progressive design starts bright, gets fuzzy, then goes acoustic. It’s melodic in one moment and dissonant in another. Every time we think we have the song figured out, it goes somewhere we’re not expecting and offers a different satisfying surprise (all while maintaining a solid groove).

We hear a little bit of Smashing Pumpkins and Mazzy Star in this track, but also some similarities to modern shoegaze-inspired bands like Just Mustard.

Indie rockers Jessica Ever caught our attention with their new single “Ugly & Out of It.” If you focus in on any of the individual elements of this song (drums, bass, guitar) you’ll notice that each one stays unique and interesting while also supporting the overall song and its driving force: the lyrics.

This isn’t an easy balance to strike and we’re really impressed by it. The rhythm section here reminds us of the Smiths while the song’s other elements bring bands like Hop Along to mind.

Sink Down,” the new single from Chicago-based dream pop band Snowcuffs, is a trip. It starts quickly and holds us hypnotically from the beginning to the end.

At the same time, the song is grounded by a catchy chorus that makes it especially memorable. We hear a lot of influence from artists like Beach House and Cocteau Twins in this song.

Follow,” the title track from the new EP by Los Animales Del Sur, would fit well into any of your alternative rock playlists with artists like MGK, KennyHoopla, or Jean Dawson. It’s an uptempo banger with a surprising instrumental bridge that really ties the whole track together. We can’t wait to check out the rest of the EP.
