Best New Indie – Jonnythefirth, A Days Wait, Gigi Wilde, Emilio Gonzalez

We’re feeling energized by “Just the Way I’m Feeling,” the newest single from indie synth-poppers Jonnythefirth. It immediately hooks us with its opening synth riff and keeps us grooving from beginning to end with its steady rhythm section.

The verses are thoughtful and concise, and they lead really well into a killer chorus with melody so catchy we’re sure we’ll still be humming it after the song ends.

Be sure to check this one out if you’re into bands like The Cars or The Growlers.

We’re mesmerized by “deadAlive,” the newest single from Hamilton, Ontario’s A Days Wait. There’s a great blend of ambient tones and instrumentation at play in this song. The sonic and structural arrangements have been carefully crafted in a way that grabs the emotional attention of the listener and keeps him or her invested in the total journey of the song.

Musically, this one reminds us of early 2000s britpop anthems from bands like The Verve and Keane. Vocally, it better resembles artists like Tame Impala. Suffice to say, we think something can be found to love in this track for indie rock and dream pop fans alike.

We love everything about eye to eye, the new single from Gigi Wilde. It’s refreshingly creative and full of intriguing progressive surprise. Modern indie rock instincts collide with an appreciation of Jobim style Bossa nova and an imaginative production touch familiar to Radiohead on this immersive release.

The new single is explosive in its energetic moments, while reverting to an introspective peace in the short alternating sections. This could have been two songs, but what’s the fun in that? We love the approach to this glorious art piece.

We adore the natural candid essence of Purple Moon, the new single from Emilio Gonzalez. In their writing we hear an influence of indie pioneer Elliot Smith. The arrangement has a refreshing free form feel. It’s not so boxed in, rather Gonzalez lets his players lend some candid feeling to their parts.

They advance an aura familiar to Wilco, Fleet Foxes, or Grizzly Bear. In that manner Purple Moon reflects a now classic age in indie music, an era we hope to get back to.
