Best New Rock – Slung, Billy Bonbon, Larlin, Michael Sanders

Alt rock is eternal and Slung brandishes its never-ending light. Just when we thought we heard the last proper alt rock song, this tight-knit crew of rock revival friends bring it back with their new single Limassol.

The song breaks a lot of rules while finding some fresh spirit for an influence of nineties grunge. STP and Soundgarden fans will delight in the vibes familiar sway, while A Perfect Circle fans will relish in these tones. To be fair, Slung is doing something all their own. It’s both new and classic, and never derivative. Play it loud and let it release you. Slung is sick.

Billy Bonbon are having more fun than you. They needed their own 6 minute theme song to celebrate, and you get that and more with the release of their new single and video companion. The kids are more than alright in this comical escapade.

Whether they’re on stroll through a city street in drag or mod regale, they carry themselves live merrymen from a bygone era. Take life less seriously and do it with a classic post punk soundtrack to fuel you. The band is tight and the song is catchy, but the fun is enviable. Take life less seriously. Be like Billy Bonbon. Listen to the song Billy Bonbon. Billy Bonbon.

Larlin caught our attention with her new single Favours. The inspired narrative lands authentic on this relatable release. An introspective quarrel feels genuine within this complicated story. The plight of an artist can weigh heavy on everyone around them. Some of us feel obligated to show that love back while some of us are just too weak to face it.

Such a daunting complex deserves this kind of passionate emotional plea in song. It’s tricky when you feel like you don’t deserve it, while also wondering if anyone deserves you. Larlin has that kind of majesty. Even still she offers Favours in a way that still feels like it’s a song for everyone. It’s a damn good performance too. Get into it.

We love the complimenting features heard on blue, the new single from Michael Sanders. With the classic folk pop presence of their vocal they find balance between the progressive swings of this inspired composition.

Stylistically they find the middle ground between Weezer and The Thrills. There’s some California coastal spirit married with punk rocks appreciation for fifties melodic movements. It’s clever and catchy while never feeling to caught up in the spirit of its influences. It’s a testament to Sanders natural presence within this vibe. They never sound like they’re playing the part. It feels right, and it never feels yellow. It truly feels blue. Swim into it.
