Emerging Folk – Byland, The Lowtimers, Skinny Dippers, Lost Mary

This new single by Byland, called Lithium, caught our attention with its ethereal vibe, brought by the layering of vocals and powerful string instruments. Fans of Lorde and Sufjan Stevens will love the moody atmosphere the artist builds in this song. Its lyrics show the artist’s acceptance of her melancholy state, which goes perfectly with the slow, dark instrumental.

The use of piano and string, which builds up in the climax of the song in unison, immerses you in an emotional experience. The alternative folk track is innovative for its genre and engaging for the listener. On tour around the United States, you can hear her music live.

This single, Cracks from The Lowtimers, combines folk and country with fresh, dreamy, acoustic guitar and country twang in the vocals. It’s nostalgic of summer and inspires an uplifting feeling. We hear a mix of soul and Americana in their style of music.

Reminiscent of artists like Doc & Merle Watson and Blaze Foley, the harmonica mixed with the acoustic melodies of the guitar brings out the humble themes of the lyrics. The band has an album coming out on May 16th, which we encourage listeners to check out.

Next is the track Breathe from Skinny Dippers, reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel in the vocals but with aspects of Pinegrove in the guitar. The song is refreshing and anthemic, with a nice balance of acoustic guitar and sliding guitar sounds. The instrumental creates a soundscape of freedom. We like how the simplicity of the vocal melodies is encompassing of a simple life.

Sonically, this single is unique in the listening experience it offers. As it hones in on instrumental toward the end, the tone becomes more grimy, but still keeps its folk feel. This single is the artist’s most recent release, and we look forward to hearing more soon.

This new single from Lost Mary captivated us, called Clothing Line. The track is similar to the works of Noah Kahan and Hozier. The melodies created with the acoustic guitar and banjo put the listener in a moody place, which is carried throughout the song. Although it starts out simple, it complicates as the song goes on while still being catchy.

This song stood out to us with the dark atmosphere created from the lyrics. Its folk sound mixed with country is vital to the theme of the song. This is a band to keep on your radar, as they are continuing to release more singles to come.
