Retro Pop Revival – Hush Bewlay, Waves_On_Waves, BUOS, Georgi

Hush Bewlay adds some clever lyrical touches to his new single Social Smoker. This classic indie synth pop post punk vibe has it all ways. The artist is likely to drawn comparisons to the National for both his catchy baritone and his dynamic arrangement, but it’s the drum part that really ties this vibe to the legacy of Joy Division.

In tandem with that influence, every instrument offers something meaningful while nothing really dominates the spectrum. From the guitars to the synths to the drums, everything adds colour. They’re all there to benefit the vocal. The songs focal feature is its most impactful element. We dig it.

Waves_On_Waves and Crimewave have teamed up for another brilliant collab via the artists Waves_on_Waves After Dark brand. The song is it’s too late and it’s a clever retro post punk throwback in the vein of classic New Order.

The dull static piano also recalls an influence of The Cure. Stylistically it’s sure to connect with fans in the vast retro wave canon. Most importantly it’s about the song and not the vibe. This composition could work in any construct, but we do like this version. That is, until we hear the trademark remix. We’re guessing it’s coming. Get in early.

The future is now for fans of BUOS. An amalgamation of wave ripples righteously from this stylistic palette of this retro master. Whether you argue its of a vaporware or chill wave aesthetic, you can’t deny it’s effectiveness. Songs like their recent Lucid and Dreams drip from another dimension of electric space and time.

It’s a facet of this movement and one that feels tethered to the cinematic aura of this vibe. The care to detail lies in the mix, as everything is altered to land soft or lofi, while subtle specters guide your auditory trip.

Drift away. BUOS is featured on our Best New Synthwave Dreamwave Playlist.

Georgi is a star. Her new single Shadows is an electro industrial retro pop banger. The vibe is illuminated by a convincing music video. The synth work is rich and her dark angel aura fits well into this framework.

It’s catchy too, with real crossover potential in the vein of Evanescence or NIN. Stylistically she finds the middle ground between those two breakthrough dark spirited projects. The video has them both beat in cinematic brilliance. This realm needs a fresh superstar. Georgi can fly.
