Hip Hop Discovery – Christou DaKeeng, Pavy

Christou DaKeeng’s new single “Trillionaire” is a headturner. His effortless blend of enriching harmonic licks and lyrically driven verses showcase his versatility within just one track. This combination of rapping and singing is a trait that not many Hip Hop artists can achieve. His delivery is reminiscent of artists like Aminé and, even more so, Atlanta’s Marco Plus, but something about DaKeeng still allows him to stick out amongst his contemporaries. The varying drum production from section to section on this track allows it to progress and not remain a constant loop.

And just when you think you have “Trillionaire” all figured out, a beat switch about three quarters of the way through keeps listeners on the edge of their seats. DaKeeng’s clever references and witty wordplay help define his stylistic approach as an MC, but remember he’s just as good a singer as he is a lyricist. Christou DaKeeng is definitely a name to look out for in the future, and his stylistic blends are vital to maximizing and diversifying his outreach.

Pavy’s “Another Chicago Girl” off of his album Bachelor Deux is out now. The Jazz influenced Boom Bap track feels like a dreamy Saba song. Pavy’s laid back flow eases him through his complex situation with the woman in question, who I get the impression he hasn’t seen in years. His tranquil singing on the hook bleeds into the verses as well, helping Pavy maintain a sort of confidence while approaching the subject matter.

The saxophones match Pavy’s vibe perfectly: cool, calm, and collected. The instrumentation on this track was tactfully chosen in accordance to a specific energy. It feels as though everything was carefully decided before it was executed, because everything falls into place like a puzzle. Pavy entered with a mission and is clearly exiting successfully.
