The collective LAGOS IN PARIS have returned with a new video for their song “Sinatanale.” The video was co-directed by LAGOS IN PARIS and Romain Argento. It features a man in a suit with a briefcase, who seems to be late to something, presumably work, who travels long distances before encountering what I interpreted to be a younger version of himself.
The video subtly pays homage to the collective’s West-African origins and highlights the contrasting emotions and focuses of an adult versus a child. Well-defined distant overhead shots make everything in the video feel even more realistic, and help give viewers an inside look to what a day of life might look like there.
The video for SAGOSAID’s new song “Am I afraid of dying?” is out now. The video showcases SAGOSAID performing in various places, and maintains a consistent thread of new shots and angles. This lack of excessive repetition keeps me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.
The Lo-Fi visuals for “Am I afraid of dying?” fuels the dreamy and hazy aesthetic. The quality of the shoot is reminiscent of videos like Kero Kero Bonito’s “Only Acting” and Clairo’s “4EVER.” Warm color palettes and zoomed in but unfocused shots tie everything together and complete the vibe. “Am I afraid of dying?” has a video that matches the aesthetic of the song perfectly.
BUOS’ “Nightmare” video has been released. The nostalgic vibe of the animated video fits it’s musical qualities perfectly, and the intentional use of vibrant colors over a contrasting black background adds to this nostalgic vibe even more. The hi-tech animations throughout various scenes include things like realistic water, an owl with glowing eyes, and a reflective metallic man who instantly made me think of Silver Surfer, all of which could be straight out of a nightmare.
One scene that stuck out to me featured the reflective metallic man running through the darkness while a recurring cloud loomed over head, before finally going through a transformation and changing color. The symbolic nature of this scene is very reflective of the song’s title and, once again, the musical attributes as well. The texturized patterns of things like the metallic man and the water ironically made the video even more ominous, as it felt like my attention was to be focused on these colorful moving aspects and I was to allow the rest of the screen to fade away to nothing.
The eerie introduction to Art d’Ecco’s new “Tree of Life” video is immediately thrown out the window just seconds later. The transformation from the somber scenery in the opening scene to the bright and colorful setting that carries on throughout the remainder of the video feels like a modern take on the same concept in The Wizard of Oz.
The bright saturated filters and clear blue skies are the perfect way to lead into the falsetto singing that takes over the beat. The funky dance moves and unique attire add to the obscurity of the track. This video is another timeless piece of nostalgia.
The video for “Alice,” the new song from mcbaise, is a trip to say the least. The animated video opens up with a girl in a world that looks straight out of a fairytale who travels to the store for some candy. While enjoying this candy in the woods, she accidentally consumes a psychedelic mushroom, and embarks on an entirely new journey I’m sure she wasn’t expecting.
While we see the girl’s body harbor the mushroom, and I mean literally because we watch the mushroom decompose within her body, she adventures throughout the fairytale forest, mirroring the physical movements of the personified mushroom within her. All while this is happening, a mysterious oracle plays guitar atop a mountain. The periodic cycle between scenes of the girl, the mushroom, and the prophet all coincide in the video’s final scenes, where we see the girl ascend the mountain. The concluding visuals are even more unorthodox as they depict the girl ultimately turning into a sunflower and the oracle atop the mountain transforming into a mushroom… until the very end when he is seen watering more personified mushrooms.
