Hip Hop Discovery – safetravelz, Vka$h, Y.S. x Royal Flush, definethehero, Bhozy x Daz

safetravelz‘s new double track “lack of change / paper” is a beautiful song where we hear safetravelz confront a variety of topics head on. From parental approval and the current state of his relationship with drugs to politically driven lines relevant to issues happening all over the world, the track’s first half is a plethora of emotions. safetravelz let’s listeners know he wants things to change for the better.

This track goes further than just conscious rap, it’s motive-driven rap. Even with his laid-back flow, which compliments the beat and its minimal percussion, safetravelz is rapping with a purpose. Fans of Navy Blue and MIKE would be fond of the tracks second half which is coated with ethereal airy textures and various symphonic instruments all topped off with a beautiful vocal sample. safetravelz raps with a motive, and more than anything I hope his music makes an impact.

Vka$h has released his new single “Beat the Odds.” The Michigan influenced track is perfect for fans of Babyface Ray and Rio Da Yung Og. The melodic hook and gritty verses are a pleasant contrast to each other that both fit the construct of the beat perfectly. Vka$h’s nonchalant but charismatic verses are essential in this subgenre.

The song is extremely relevant in the current state of Rap music with its progressive flows and lyrics and modernized percussion. This Flint/Detroit production style is popular enough to have even bled its way into Southern Trap and Philly Drill music. This track was released at the perfect time.

Y.S. and Royal Flush’s new song “Remission” is out now. Y.S., short for Young Sleep, and Royal Flush are somewhere between Griselda’s Benny the Butcher and New York legend Jadakiss with their distinct voices and driving flows.

The heavy Boom Bap drums that lie beneath the cinematic piano loop and soulful organ chords all combine together to form a beat very reminiscent of Hip-Hop’s golden age. All of these are backed by an indistinct vocal sample that adds a warm texture to the instrumental. Y.S. and Royal Flush are full of intelligent punchlines that are both cleverly amusing and introspective. With subtle odes to their love of Hip-Hop, they’re definitely important figures in the Rap world to keep an eye on.

“I won’t, but I should,” the new track from definethehero, is an amalgam of various styles and textures all merged together to form an interestingly unique soundscape. The smooth drums comprise bouncy kicks, slick hi hats, a unique rimshot pattern, and other various percussive noises sprinkled in the background. This production reminds me of something Mavi would rap on, but definethehero’s approach is more reminiscent of somebody like Saba or the internet Rap star Foggieraw.

It feels like definethehero has a back pocket full of flows, as he never seems to remain on one consistent loop of syllables. This, combined with the interesting and unpredictable chord progression, both make the track stand out immediately. His vocal layers concur with the distant synths and ambient textures which work hand in hand with the Boom Bap production to bring everything together.

Bhozy and Daz dropped their new track “Right Now.” The song is driven by a Jazzy guitar lick that sounds like it could belong on Dr. Dre’s The Chronic: 2001. Bhozy’s grimy flow is layered with high pitched vocal licks and background vocals that are mixed perfectly. The catchy hook helps differentiate the track’s different sections and showcases his different stylistic approaches on just one beat.

Bhozy’s confidence is apparent from beginning to end, in both his lyrics and his delivery. His delivery sounds like a more aggressive version of Stove God Cooks with a bit more emphasis and force. This track was both a vibe and a spirited head bopper lead by Bhozy’s self-assurance.
