Emerging Folk – Pegasuses, Dana Debolt, Arrows of the Sun, abijah

Pegasuses kicks us off with their recent EP release, Magic Beans, an eclectic and inventive take on the indie folk scene. The title track is our personal favorite. Right off the bat we are hit with perfectly sung melodies, intriguing chord progressions, and masterful production quality. We love the dissonance created in this one. The mood is bright and upbeat, but the transitioning chord sequences between chorus and verse present darker undertones that instantly caught our ear.

We hear similarities to the music from Fleet Foxes and Little Joy, exemplified by their catchy harmonies and excellent musicianship. With their clever art, approachable vibe, and quirky style, this emerging band is worth keeping on your radar. Don’t miss out on Pegasuses.

Up next is Dana Debolt with her latest single release, “Ride Cowboy Ride,” a folk americana ballad that instantly reminds us of classic folk singers like Joni Mitchell and newer indie artists like Brandi Carlile. We love the emotional pull in this tune. Her lyrics suggest themes of urban resilience and fleeing the familiar for greener pastures, tying them together with classic americana instrumentation like the pedal steel and acoustic guitar.

We love the americana feel with this song and the rest of Dana’s catalogue, especially her last few single releases. We look forward to hearing more from this up and coming folk sensation.

Arrows of the Sun is back with a new single called “You and me and the trauma,” an introspective sonic journey packed full of emotion and authenticity. We hear influences from post punk groups like The Cure in this one, while the vocal style and instrumentation remind us of more current indie bands like Modern Baseball.

This indie folk tune is refreshingly simple and uncluttered. We love the airy and atmospheric, upbeat vibe juxtaposed to darker themes of shared pain and loss suggested by the lyrics. Don’t miss out on Arrows of the Sun and their fresh take on the indie folk scene.

Abijah instantly caught our attention with the second tune from his latest EP release, “Disappear,” a heartfelt and intoxicating indie folk tune that tugs at our heartstrings. We love the instrumentation in this tune. A melancholic grand piano is paired with acoustic guitar and a simplistic drum groove, all delightfully tied together in a fantastic production.

We hear similarities to the music from Noah Kahan and Hozier in this one, exemplified by their intimate vocal styles and themes of emotional introspection. With a voice that can stand up to his contemporaries and a style all his own, Abijah has a promising future in the music industry. We look forward to hearing more.
