Best New Indie – Forever Forever, MUANH, Wintur, CATSINGTON

“Stasis”, the new single from Forever Forever, is out now. The track opens with warm synths, humble guitar strums, and soothing vocals. The only drum that lines the introduction is a steady kick, and it’s not until the chorus first hits that the track blossoms into a new section with more expansive instrumentation.

While the verses are graceful and ethereal, each chorus feels theatrical and stimulating. It’s as if each verse of “Stasis” is a lead up to the chorus that follows, and as if each chorus is meant to make the verses feel more emotional. With a fusion of genres that prevents Forever Forever from being musically constrained, “Stasis” is an abundance of emotions that appeals to various audiences.

MUANH’s new song “All Night” is a beautifully written melodic track. With memorable lyrics and infectious melodies, the track is a dreamy romantic anthem that resonates with the late night overthinkers. “I let it slip through my fingers and it’s keeping me up, and it’s keeping me up all night” is a relatable line that’s honest and down to earth.

“All Night” sounds like it could fit in on beabadoobee’s 2020 album Fake it Flowers. The Lo-Fi infused Pop track is supported by a heavy kick and snare, with electric pianos soaked in effects that lie on top. Panned out and reverberated vocals further fuel the dreamy aesthetic of the song. MUANH is a creative writer and producer to keep an eye out for in the future.

Wintur’s vocal performance on his new song “burnt” is phenomenal. With reverb and other effects making them even more distinct and identifiable, Wintur shows off various tones and dynamic tendencies that vary from section to section. The song is coated with a vinyl crackle that provides a warm backdrop for the instrumentation. Distant pianos and filtered drums lead into the explosive chorus full of gritty synths and more prominent drums.

“burnt” is a track full of vulnerable lyrics that I presume is about a previous lover who hurt Wintur, but for some reason he can’t help but go back to them. The vulnerability this track provides is exactly the reason why artists have a platform to share their music in the first place.

CATSINGTON’s “down way down” has been released. The track features vocals from various singers in the group which provides interesting textural diversity. The layering of their vocals feels like colors being mixed on a color palette. “down way down” is reminiscent of Bon Iver’s music with its nature infused soundscape and easygoing mix.

The acoustic guitars and various string instruments are backed by a plethora of drums and percussion. The unique choice of instrumentation is refreshing and attention grabbing. CATSINGTON’s vibe is unlike any other, yet it’s still something that could appeal to such a wide audience.
