Hip Hop Discovery – Akanimo, Akassia x Eliy Orcko x Sodaquaye, Andrew P. Oliver x Hew G., Salam MC x Author Supreem x Mort Beazy

Akanimo’s new track “Relaxation Electric” is out now. The rhythmic track is full of crisp hi hats and snares that bounce off of each other and other percussive noises. A modest bass and kick help the track remain sonically in place while trippy synth chords glide in and out amongst them.

Subtle synth stabs and an air horn make their way into the song at different stages throughout the verses. Akanimo’s nonchalant approach to rapping correlates perfectly with the instrumentation, and his clever punchlines are something to listen for.

“What They Say,” the new track from AkassiaEliy Orcko, and Sodaquaye is out now. Along with production similar to that of Mac Miller’s, something about the style of rapping on this song is reminiscent of Lupe Fiasco. The track is guided by its simple vibey guitar licks and spicened by the groovy saxophone that spans the entirety of the track yet hardly repeats itself.

The addition of the saxophone makes “What They Say” an even more unique take on Boom Bap and Jazz. The vibey summer piece has a catchy melodic chorus that provides a sense of diversity from the verses, and the saxophone solo is the cherry on top of everything.

Andrew P. Oliver and Hew G. have released their new track “Better Off.” The track is driven by a repeated brass stab that’s both old school and cinematic. Below the brass stab is a gloomy piano chord that acts as a call and response to the brass.

A sense of evolution is attained with harmonic piano strums on a higher octave and additional drums interspersed at different sections. The charismatic flow and delivery on this track effortlessly makes the vocal part melodically more diverse, simply because of how intricate the delivery is.

Salam MCAuthor Supreem, and Mort Beazy have joined forces for their new track “Take One for the Team.” The heavy trap anthem is fast paced and modestly aggressive, and the rappers are careful to not overstep but also don’t leave any energy off the track.

With various vocal tendencies and textures, there are different aspects to appreciate about each verse. Malicious bars are supported by the trap production that matches the rappers’ energy perfectly. There’s something about the simplicity of this track that makes it all the more appealing and enjoyable to listen to.
