Best New Indie – Drew Elliott, Viruette x Layzi, Mollie Elizabeth, Nadia Faye

You need to hear Drew Elliott‘s latest single, “I Hope I Never Leave Your Mind.” This one is intoxicatingly dreamy. We dig the juxtaposition between heavy modulated synth layering overtop a simple acoustic guitar track and rhythm section, accentuating the complicated emotions brought on by this tune’s lyricism. As it progresses, we hear an incredible vocal performance with equally masterful harmonies, interesting chord structures, and multiple memorable guitar solo sections. We also love the inventive shift in tempo towards the latter half of this song; the band slowing down, taking a moment and really feeling the groove in a short spurt of improvisation.

We hear similarities to the music from artists like Tame Impala and Mac DeMarco in this tune when comparing production styles and instrumental choices. We dig what Drew has been up to. Don’t miss out on his music.

Viruette and Layzi are back with their infectious indie-rock single release, “PUNKTURED,” an intriguing and inventive tune that we cannot get enough of. We love the funk vibe here, and we love the jazz-inspired chord progressions even more. These artists manage to package up influences from each of these genres, wrapping them up nicely with a classic indie-rock feel that can appeal to the masses. With multiple rhythm instrumental tracks and structured composed sections, we are floored with a wall of sound that is masterfully produced and performed.

This band takes influence from the modern indie scene as well as the progressive scene. It’s almost like a mix between Sly & The Family Stone and The Marias. Absolutely wild and we dig it.

Mollie Elizabeth recently dropped her debut EP, a collection of six tunes called Dirty Blonde. We dig the third track, “Doe Eyes.” The retro, doo-wop style utilized here immediately gives this tune a charming, upbeat vibe and allows Mollie a chance to place her own inventive twist on an old-school staple. The production here is nothing short of exceptional. We hear an insatiable bass and drum groove that leaves room for an ethereal layer of overtones for the vocals and rhythm guitars to play on top of. Harmonies are sharp, lyrics are catchy, and the lead vocal is on point throughout the song.

Fans of Dua Lipa and her adaptations/revival of classic, established melodies and progressions from past decades. In terms of vocal timbre and production style, we are reminded of modern female pop sensations like Reneé Rapp and Sabrina Carpenter.

Nadia Faye instantly caught our attention with her latest single release, “Smoke in the Room,” an anthemic and euphoric tune that tugs at the heartstrings. The vocals are impressive here. We hear Nadia singing in a higher register for the majority of this tune, showcasing a unique vocal timbre that stands out amongst her modern contemporaries. Her harmonies are equally incredible. We dig the instrumentals in this one as well; a busy bassline and a quick tempo to juxtapose the light and airy, intimate vocal performance. We cannot overstate the uplifting, comforting atmosphere created in this production.

Fans of Billie Eilish will instantly connect with the breathy, personal vocal style in this wonderful production. We look forward to hearing more from Nadia in the near future. Keep her on your radar.
