Hip Hop Discovery – Doza, 85MAY$, Leedz Edutainment x DJ Slipwax x Reks x Skyzoo x The Arcitype x Torae

Doza’s new track “Keep it Down” is out now. Doza’s nearly ceaseless flow is the driving force of the song. His powerful delivery and pronunciation set him apart from the average rapper and make his witty braggadocious bars justified.

The groovy instrumentation is coated with gliding synths and a subtle flute sample. The beat sounds like something I’d hear Cordae or maybe even Chance the Rapper rhyme on, but Doza’s refreshing rhythmic approach shows he’s different.

“Eyez on the Prize” is the new song from 85MAY$, and it’s a headbopper. 85MAY$ has an endless library of clever punchlines, and he shows some off on this track with his confident delivery. His lyrics and references display his dedication to the art, and that’s necessary in a genre that doesn’t always get taken as seriously as it should.

The beat for “Eyez on the Prize” sounds like something Earl Sweatshirt and Mavi could have collaborated on. The filtered guitars and strings feel orchestral and grand, but don’t make the song feel sonically unbalanced. In fact, they fit in so perfectly that it’s hard to tell which parts of this beat are samples and which aren’t.

Leedz Edutainment has assembled a star-studded cast for the new track “Hard to Learn.” DJ Slipwax, Reks, Skyzoo, The Arcitype, and Torae all come together on the Boom Bap anthem, and none of them leave any energy off of the track.

Whether it’s the melodic brass and string samples, the retro record scratches, or the energetic deliveries and flows, “Hard to Learn” is nothing short of a banger. It’s not surprising that a song with Skyzoo reminds me of Griselda considering he’s collaborated with Westside Gunn, Benny the Butcher, and Conway the Machine on various tracks. This is the type of music that drove Hip Hop to another level, and it’s amazing to see that after all these years it’s still a prominent style in the vastly evolving landscape of the genre.
