Best New Indie – awfultune, Chris Combs, TWIN ENVY, Laut Fragen

Awfultune is back with a new, wonderfully eclectic 5-track EP called Split, and we really dig the final track, “AlonE.” This tune utilizes synth tones and a myriad of atmospheric production techniques to carry the melody, sprinkling in hints of a traditional string section overtop that classic indie rock backline. We love the use of long release delay and reverb on the lead vocal track here; creating an ambient vibe that shifts our perspective of what a lead vocalist’s role can look like. The vocals become one with their backing instrumentation, serving as a both a rhythmic driver and an additional melodic element with a timbre similar to that of synthetic instruments. This masterful production ties them together, both synthetic and organic, manipulating their sound into something inventive and euphoric.

The psychedelic indie-pop vibe here bridges the gap between Clairo and The Flaming Lips, combining elements from bedroom pop and alternative music into a fresh, new concept that we cannot get enough of. We really dig what Awfultune has been up to recently.

Up next is Chris Combs with his latest single release, “Can’t Stop,” a dreamy, intoxicating indie-rock tune that promptly leaves us wanting more. We love the funky, experimental nature of this tune. Right off the bat, we are hit with a chugging, neon drum and bass groove that compliments one incredibly performed lead vocal and a variety of psychedelic overtones. The vocal harmonies are noteworthy here as well, perfectly interjecting at pivotal transitional moments. We hear erratic sound effects between sections of the song, building sonic tension that is dispersed with the reintroduction of its instrumentation. The synth tones and melodies are groovy, the vocal effects are groundbreaking, and the vibe is nothing short of intriguingly bizarre. We love it.

Fans of Tame Impala will instantly connect with this artist’s eclectic, experimental soundscapes and production style. We really dig the double A side single that was released in conjunction with this tune, “Historicity,” an emotionally charged instrumental preamble to “Can’t Stop.” Both of these tunes serve as a modern masterclass in production and songwriting; we highly recommend you check them out.

TWIN ENVY recently dropped “Fever Dream,” a moody insight into the modern indie-rock scene. We love the intimate vocal work here. The harmonies breathe life into this mix, showcasing exceptional musicianship and authenticity. Themes of uncertainty and longing are conveyed both through lyricism and instrumentation here, each masterfully complimenting the other through sectional transitions and melodic/rhythmic nuances. The synth tones are crunchy, the drum groove is busy, and the keys are syncopated; each element adding to the feeling of precariousness. Overall, the energy in this one is anthemic, aesthetic, and playfully experimental.

We hear similarities to the music from artists like Rex Orange County and Ax & the Hatchetmen in this tune; fans of the modern indie-rock scene will instantly connect with this sound. Don’t miss out on this massively talented emerging indie group. We look forward to hearing more.

Laut Fragen‘s new song “Ich weiss es nicht” is out now. We love the fun, upbeat feel of this one. We hear multiple synth layers, each complete with vastly different sounds and effects, providing a melodic and rhythmic foundation for the vocals and percussion tracks. The melodies are quirky and eclectic, the groove is simple and danceable, and their energy is insatiable. We also love the harmonies throughout this one; complete with multiple shouting voices that add to the raw energy felt here. Despite being sung in German, these lyrics are easily digestible and will appeal to the masses, regardless of their natal tongue.

Fans of post-punk sensations like Joy Division and modern, alternative indie groups like MGMT will instantly connect with this artist’s unique and eclectic musical style. Their work is the perfect mix of modern production proficiency and old school fun; you don’t want to miss out on the next indie-pop sensation.
