Hip Hop Discovery – Chepps, O.G. Soul x B. Griff, OS!, Bolt Seminar

Chepps’ new track “Smokey” is out now. The vibey Boom Bap track is led by its wavy samples and wobbly guitars and synths. The laid-back energy of the beat is slightly reminiscent of Logic and Wiz Khalifa’s stoner anthem “Indica Badu,” and even has subtle hints of Tyler, the Creator influence.

The title and cover both suggest the song is a smoker’s anthem, and Chepps’ smooth laid back flow compliments the concept even more. “Smokey” is a well-rounded cohesive song with a motive behind it that’s executed perfectly.

O.G. Soul and B. Griff have teamed up for their new collaboration “Montecristo (Just Ride).” The song’s nostalgic production takes inspiration from early 2000’s Kanye West production for Jay-Z with its unique snare hits and retro brass stabs.

The compelling twist comes with O.G. Soul and B. Griff’s style of rapping. Their modernized take reminds me of artists like yvngxchris and Tokyo’s Revenge, and is a refreshing reimagination of the old school production style.

“Loose” is the new song from OS! The production style is a rhythmically innovative spin on R&B artists like Steve Lacy or even classic Frank Ocean records. The sophisticatedly mixed drums are lined by jazzy electric pianos and idiosyncratic percussive noises.

A modest guitar solo acts as the concluding encore of the track. The production and singing sounds like a blend of Mac Miller and Isaiah Rashad with his gritty melodic vocals and groovy bounce.

Bolt Seminar’s “Love is Fever” is out now. The minimalist approach to the track’s production works in Seminar’s favor as it leaves him a perfect amount of room to showcase his energetic flows.

The tracks heavy drums are sprinkled with a minimal amount of melodic instrumentation that includes chopped piano stabs, subtle synth bells and most prominently a catchy vocal sample that repeatedly says the tracks title. Seminar doesn’t let off the gas in terms of energy but is careful not to overstep and become too aggressive. His clever lyrics are ones to be focused on, and he breaks the verses up with the vocal sample so listeners can digest these clever bars.
