Music Videos We Love – Pynch, San Gabriel, Eydís Evensen x Ásgeir

Pynch’s new song “Post-Punk / New-Wave” feels like an ode to the limitless creative directions an artist can take their music in. On the contrary, it also highlights the intimidating factor of having an overwhelming amount of avenues to pursue and the labels that come with each of them. I feel Pynch has dedicated this song to the idea of complete freedom over creative direction with no strings attached.

The song’s video showcases Pynch at the beach and boardwalk doing everything from playing live music to going on boardwalk rides to even playing chess in the car. The concept of a beach being so open and free mirrors the idea of freedom in an artist’s work. I think this symbolism is easy to overlook but essential for all artists to understand.

San Gabriel reconstructed his song “Play With Fire” live in Marfa, TX. Circled by a ring of large rocks, the video depicts San Gabriel seemingly in the middle of nowhere while he reassembles his song using the instrumentation he’s surrounded by.

The desert landscape that backs San Gabriel’s performance is fitting for the guitar and synth driven production. In such a vastly open setting he is able to project his voice and jam out with no judgement or interruption, which is why it feels like the perfect place for anybody to reconstruct a song live.

Eydís Evensen’s new track “Dimmuborgir” with Ásgeir is a beautifully constructed ballad backed by symphonic instrumentation that ranges from a plethora of string sounds to various brass instrumentation. The track’s contrasting sections are both somber and promising in tone and remind me of something from Phoebe Bridgers’ Punisher album.

The song’s video, done entirely in black and white, is very complimentary to the track’s energy. Eydís Evensen and Ásgeir are seen on a beach, hair blowing in the wind, simply singing and playing guitar. The various cinematic shots of the landscape are both beautiful and a bit eerie because of the dark color palette, which once again is fitting to the contrasting sections of the song.
