Best New Indie – Somebody Someone, Quaking Aspens, MacGregor Burns

Somebody Someone‘s newest single, The Light, made a strong impression on us with its unique instrumental composition. Its dreamy, euphoric melody consists of electric guitar riffs, gentle piano chords, and lo-fi drums. It supports the vocals, which are layered to create harmonies saturated in a serene, emotionally rich tone.

In their sound, you can hear similarities to artists like Weyes Blood and Alice Phoebe Lou. Its melodies are calm and sentimental, yet still excite you and inspire you. Make sure to check out this soul-stirring single, along with the incredible music video that goes along with it.

Another song that really grabbed our attention was Flume, a collaboration between Quaking Aspens and Nierra Creek. Creating a melancholy world of sound, this track’s atmosphere is made by the moody chords and tones of the electric guitar melodies that layer together. Matching the rhythmic energy are the drums, which highlight the unique rhythms of this track.

The vocals are fluid and full of satisfying, poetic energy. They hone in on the complexity of sorrow that the song’s theme portrays, encapsulating its wistful emotion. Quaking Aspens has released this single on their new EP, titled Folklore Volume 2. If you haven’t had enough of this artist, check out the two other singles they’ve released this year.

Last but not least, What I’ve Been Looking For by MacGregor Burns is the song to enlighten your mood and relax you. Its theme is about appreciating what you have in life, allowing its sentimental energies to warm your heart. The vocals, with a strong tone and charming sound, portray the song’s joyful mood perfectly.

We appreciate the relaxing qualities of the instrumental, which are created through the easy-going melodies of the electric guitar, blissful drums, and majestic string chords brought out in the chorus. His next album will be released this fall and will include this track, titled My Corner. Make sure to give it a listen.
