Best New Indie – The Sways, Christina Ward, loverghost, besphrenz

The Sways caught out attention with their new single Someday We Will Dream About It. A catchy acoustic rock gem gets the indie pop treatment, as the band channels a vibe familiar to Lord Huron. It’s got a Laurel Canyon hue with dead drum sounds that evolve that influence modern. The stacked pre chorus vocals illuminate the tension in advance of the breakdowns delicious keyboard lead. It’s in that moment the project enters another dimension, one where the Sways truly get you swaying.

It’s still mid summer but Christina Ward is already propelling images of November. The buzz worthy Philly area songwriter knows not to stray too far from the feeling. November is a bare arrangement where the big swoons land convincing. Ward’s voice is slightly saturated in a way that pierces the sonic atmosphere. Her voice bears a semblance of Feist while the production quality recalls slower recent numbers from The War On Drugs. There’s a spiritual reverence to November. We adore this vibe.

We like what we hear from loverghost and their new single Sweet Tooth. Alt folk with an emo heart, Sweet Tooth recalls the influence of Petey and Alex G while adding some new youthfulness to that vibe. There’s an innocence to this narrative, with lucid rhetoric that evolves with cinematic reverence. Rhythmic cues keep the vibe catchy, adding indie pop crossover potential for this underground gem.

Besphrenz epitomizes cool on another level. These classic indie hipsters would resent the assimilation, and they’ve evolved out of musical indie typecasts into something notable modern and fresh. It’s fair to give them their creative flowers as musical ideas flourish with eclectic prowess. The new single bears evidence of alternative hip hop and psych pop while staying true to an organic inspired essence. The emphatic kozy is crazy catchy, leaning more into their rock files, while the inspired heart attack applies them to new schools, a vibe thats illuminate in the music video (see above). Their legacies carry local weight, but the project is worth the accolades. Bresphrenz pens hits.
