Underground indie darlings Pine Barons are back with a new single and a new album announced. The single LILO heralds the release of their first full length in 10 years. The imaginative release embraces the projects ascent as production masters. The unassuming indie pop composition gets altered by the unlikely use of record scratching. It’s as as if the Flaming Lips were produced by Beastie Boys. Altogether it’s a hypnotic single with dreamy affect and late nineties pop recollection.

SunYears enlists emerging icon Nicole Atkins for a collaboration on their new single The Body. Full of expressive jive and sultry appeal, the new single fits in well with a vibe familiar to Spoon or Peter Bjorn and John. It’s got that kind of post Brit Pop essence with some added edge familiar to My Morning Jacket, one of Atkins regular collaborators. Atkins herself enjoys a loyal underground following, but nothing compared to her influential impact. A founder of the indie sound, like her collective catalog, The Body is another slice of indie gold.

In one way or another this summer we’ve all been letting ourselves go in one way or another. In that manner the new single from MacGregor Burns hits different. No matter how you relate to it, you can’t deny its rare nostalgic infection. Sentiments of solo John Lennon collide with the soulful appeal of Dobie Gray on this convincing release. Paired with a cheeky puppet featuring music video you can’t help but connect with the middle ground between good times and real times. It’s a Burn penchant we’ve come to adore. Find out.

We dig what we’re hearing on Blossomer, the new album from Stray Fossa. Highlights include Spilled Over, I Was There, and Quiet Quitting. On I Was There, Stray Fossa’s intoxicating vocal performance is executed effortlessly. The modest guitar playing leaves the perfect amount of space for the vocals to live in the limelight. Although the song remains relatively rhythmically simple, it’s the melodic aspects of this song that intrigue me. The various sections of the song feature different melodic lines, all of which are infectious and memorable.
Spilled Over is an upbeat summertime anthem featuring Stray Fossa’s tranquil vocals and catchy melodic guitar licks from beginning to end.Guitars coated in effects bring a unique atmospheric element to the song, showing that Stray Fossa cannot be sonically contained. The clever blend of styles showcases a sense of diversity in Stray Fossa’s musical approach, and lets listeners know he’s capable of so much.
