Emerging Folk – Christian Alexander, Sam Burchfield, Aidan Puntes

Christian Alexander caught our attention with his new single The Song of the Silhouettes. There’s raw truth to the vocal performance. You can sense the feeling in his voice. The simple arrangement of guitars and voices rings authentic. It’s no easy feat. Alexander resists the temptation to enrich the production with sonic treats in exchange for a more personable design. It helps to amplify the lyrics important presence. Stylistically we think it will connect with fans of Elliot Smith and Bright Eyes.

Sam Burchfield reflects on what it feels to Make Change. A soulful folk essence recalls the later full band slow country ballads known to Bob Dylan. Burchfield keeps it bottled in and bottled up, giving away just enough to make you feel something. His voice has a textured richness, like someone who sang all night and woke up with a guitar in hand and a song on his mind. Stylistically we also hear a dose of David Gray and Tom Petty. We love that vibe.

Aidan Puntes embraces an acoustic grunge influence on his notable new single Drastic. We also hear evidence of modern slacker rock in the vein of Kurt Vile. Puntes voice sounds a bit down on itself. Tired and hopeless and shamelessly appealing. The lure of these somber vibes has warped mainstream courtesy of the classic grunge movement, and inspiration that infects modern indie music. Puntes wades elegantly between the worlds of indie folk and indie rock not unlike Big Thief. It’s a good place to be.
