Best New Indie – Jouska, Boy Ferguson, Nantua, Soft Siren

Emerging indie sensation Jouska is back with her latest single release, “California,” a viciously ethereal and wonderfully melodic tune that left us overwhelmed with euphoria. We love the smooth, soothing synth textures used here, pairing seamlessly with our singer’s tranquilizing vocal tone. Stylistically, Jouska bridges the gap between Tame Impala’s psychedelic production style and beabadoobee’s modern, female-driven indie sound. We seriously look forward to seeing what they have in store for the future.

Boy Ferguson caught our attention with his recent single, “Long Night,” a blissfully eclectic and undoubtedly groovy song that we immediately fell in love with. We are greeted by an intriguing, syncopated guitar riff that leaves us eagerly waiting for resolution, only to be met with an powerful, authentic vocal melody and light, moody percussive elements. This groove slowly develops, evolving into a cohesive full band brimming with passionate emotion. And we cannot get enough. The song serves as a masterclass in both musicianship and production, showcasing Boy Ferguson as an unorthodox, yet exceptional up and coming talent to be reckoned with.

We love the intoxicating nature of Nantua’s latest release, “Reflections.” Her vocal timbre stands up to her modern female singer-songwriter contemporaries, and her production style is simply masterful. Delicate overtones compliment the vocal melody overtop an atmospheric layer of acoustic instrumentation, building sonic tension with elite harmonies and chord changes. We hear similarities to the music from boygenius and Faye Webster in this one. Do not miss out on the next top-charting indie-pop phenomenon – we look forward to hearing more.

Lastly, we have Soft Siren and their anthemic new single, “California Heatwave.” We were instantly hooked by the instrumentation in this one. An overdriven bass tone, crushing drum tones, and piercing trumpet lines holding down the rhythm for the vocal melody and guitar work. We love it all. Each element of this tune has an indisputably immaculate tone, including and especially the vocal. We hear influences from Cage the Elephant and The Flaming Lips here, with Soft Siren nailing that gritty indie vibe in a modern setting. We see big things in the future for this band – be on the lookout for more in the near future.
