Best New Rock – Hannah Winkler, CS Hellman, Drop

Hannah Winkler is vintage catchy on her new single Hey Johnny. Channeling the icon grunge pop vibe of the mid nineties, the new single might draw comparisons to legends like Weezer. We also hear a semblance of the Cars. Its a testament to the singles undeniable catchy nature while retaining an edgy quality with broad appeal. We love it.

CS Hellman isn’t afraid to admit You Caught Me At A Bad Time. This dark indie rock release is double baked in cinematic brilliance. It wades between the realms of 80s alternative and dream pop. The singers textured section offers some inspired contrast in the verse section, while he adapts his timbre dreamy in the layered chorus sections. Shimmering synths and swaths of echo give this work an ethereal shine. Stylistically it should connect with fans of Cocteau Twins and The Cure.

We lost ourselves into the hypnotic trance that is The Innocents, the new single from Drop. A tempered struggle churns intriguingly in the songs revelatory hook. Its a buried chaos, one that begs to belt above the surface of the music. Stylistically the band finds the middle ground between Deftones and dream pop. There are subtle notes of shoegaze, illuminated by the emotional nature of the vocal performance. We find it entrancing.
