Emerging Folk – Lila Holler, graygirrl, Elly Hopkins

You need to hear Lila Holler‘s newest single, “The Way I Am Now,” a deeply introspective ballad that caught our attention with its clever lyricism and exceptional vocal performance. We love the harmonies and choir effects sprinkled throughout this one, gently pulling in our ears with their atmospheric allure. A softer instrumental style places the vocal at its forefront in this masterful production, allowing us to hear the full depth of her artistry. Fans of Lizzy McAlpine or boygenius will find themselves right at home with this fresh take on the aesthetic side of modern indie-folk.

graygirrl is back with their second single release, “Van Gogh’s,” and we were instantly captivated with its eclectic nature and moody vibe. The telephone effect on her main vocal track fits this song beautifully, providing an interesting texture that matches its yearning, lonesome lyrical content. We dig the minimalist production style here, tastefully reserving those long decaying reverbs for a climactic latter half. The instrumentation is dreamy, the production is on point, and the energy is infectious. We love the cover art too.

With her third debut single release, Elly Hopkins has us impatiently waiting for a full album drop. “Kintsugi” features her authentic, intoxicatingly uplifting vocal style and a flawless instrumental performance. We hear a mix of intriguing guitar melodies and vocal lines, each track breathing life into the other throughout the duration of this song. Elly’s music is reminiscent to modern indie-folk sensations like Regina Spektor and Phoebe Bridgers, and we can’t wait to hear what she has coming next.
