Best New Indie – MOONWOOD, Mikaela Davis, Nelleke, Jordan Burchel

Sydney five-some MOONWOOD reflects on our changing experience on their new release Where Are The Kids? Catchy and slightly post punk, MOONWOOD injects catchy rhetoric with dramatic dance ready indie energy. Stylistically they bridge the gap between LCD Soundsystem and Josh Ritter. Its a banger.

Whats in a number? Mikaela Davis conjures curious spirits on her recent single 11:11. She adds some indie pop luster into a classic vibe familiar to Midlake or Fleetwood Mac. The writing is really elegant; arranged beautifully with flowing performances that feel inspired within the moment. Mikaela’s voice settles convincingly beneath the cascade of instruments and melody. Its hypnotic.

We have not forgotten about Nelleke. The artist enthralled us with previous releases. She still flys too far under the radar, but she’s back for an inspired reprise. Her new single Declaration is an empowered statement. Whereas some artists choose to lament on their status, Nelleke still feels completely immersed in her art world. That bliss comes through in the imaginative nature of Declaration. There’s fair evidence of a Bon Iver influence adapted with an added aggressiveness and innate vocal ability. The build evolves into collateral influences that land refreshing. Hang on.

Jordan Burchel sees what’s in front of him on his new single Understanding, Now. What is and what could possibly be make amends within this perplexing revelation. Burchel stays on theme, offering a coming to terms anthem meant for an existential escape. Stylistically he injects some pop flavor into a vibe that blends the worlds of indie pop and indie rock. We hear elements of The War On Drugs, Tame Impala, and Arctic Monkeys. Burchel covers a lot of ground on this inspired release.
