Best New Indie – Happy Dust Gang, néomí, Clémentine Weck, Ky J.Brandes

Happy Dust Gang is back and their new single Love Is The Key is a breakthrough indie rock pop bop. It’s simply jumping out of the speakers with pomp and fresh folly. Sneaky attitude and notable modern references reimagine how Idles might evolve as a proggy indie pop imprint. They find the middle ground between post punk and clever songwriters like The Shins or Real Estate. We’re into it.

Our favorite Nordic export néomí still flys too far under the radar. Her latest single Didn’t I adds to a string of indie pop stand outs from the emerging recording artist. Melancholy and seemingly giving to the hopelessness of unrequited love, the narrator yearns for her affection to be safe. There’s fear at the heart of this sultry poetry. “Deny, Deny, Deny,” she laments. The songwriter is brilliant and her assimilations fly high on this convincing. She’s there with the best in indie music. We can’t wait to see her in concert.

Clémentine Weck effectively breaks the language barrier on her latest Marcelle chérie. Dreamy and inventive, Weck manipulates both guitar and voice fluently. The textured mix illuminates her exotic nature. Stylistically she bends the worlds of Bon Iver or Imogen Heap with French pop precision. We think she’s delightful.

Ky J. Brandes is infinitely catchy on their new single Show. Unique sonic quips introduce the singers inviting voice as a prominent chord shift advances the songs first infectious hook. An alternating section invokes some yacht rock influences to compliment the Spoon-like indie rock jive. We just love this release.
