Best New Indie – Niamh Regan, Kyle Andrews, Anabella Paige, frans asthma

Niamh Regan got under our skin with her recent Nice.  Elegantly arranged to highlight the rare features of her voice while offering some abstract groove, Nice is truly superb.  As a unit it finds autonomy.  The composition and progression is unique but stays confined to its signature realm.

Nice doesn’t try to do everything, rather its subscribes to its own brilliance refreshingly.  Her voice could draw some similarities to Feist while the production resonates with early James Blake.  Considering Blake himself broke through with a Feist cover, Niamh Regan convincingly bridges that gap.

Kyle Andrews caught our attention with their new single Unfocus Your Eyes.  A fun catchy psych pop feel, Andrews recalls the treasured indie works of Dr Dog or Peter Bjorn & John with some of the clever folky energy familiar to The Tallest Man On Earth.

It’s an undeniable indie breakthrough, true to the spirit of the 2010’s and finding some rare earth within that realm.  Andrews feels new within a familiar realm, that elusive classic indie sound you thought was burned up.  Kyle Andrews brings it back into focus with this new classic.

Anabella Paige is worth more than a Glimpse.  The title of her new single, Paige shows she’s due for a breakout with a signature hook worthy of a summer anthem.  It’s the kind of eruption that pulls you out of your seat and into the stratosphere of life.

It’s energizing and life altering, or more appropriately, career altering.  It gives you a new interpretation of how far Paige might reach with her music.  The chorus on Glimpse is a punch in the face that resonates with the shoegaze indie rock scene, while the verse has the indie pop charm of Maggie Rogers.  Anabella Paige is all of that and everything in between.  We adore her.

Frans Asthma – Wait Outside (Full EP)

We are big fans of wait outside, the new four song EP from under the radar buzz project frans asthma.  The song’s are an effective blend of vibe and melody.  The introductory title track has a seductive soothing affect.  It’s sentimental and full of energy despite its slow design.  It’s a melodic energy, a heart is full type of brilliance.

The single Fourth of July is fairly more pensive and melancholy, offering a dreamy cinematic pause.  The EP closes with the textured chirping guitar heard on every night.  Blessed with gorgeous harmonies that interrupt the voices gracefully drawn, every night is on theme while offering some new color within this quadrant.  For fans of charming melancholy, frans asthma is a triumph.
