Best New Indie – Annie-Dog, Christine and the Queens, Ellie Temple, Bess Atwell

We relish in the approachable innovation of violence’66, the new single from Annie-Dog.  Her soft voice offers intriguing contrast to this drum and bass design.  In that way it will draw instant comparisons to the pivot known to Kid A and its breakthrough single Idioteque.  It’s a breakthrough that we thought would inspire dozens of copycat releases, but for whatever reason most artists couldn’t come close to that essence.  Until now.

Over 20 years removed Annie-Dog has thrusted that influence into our eardrums, and we are all the thankful for it.  The artists connects with artists like Grime, PinkPantheress, and Dean Blunt.  We also hear an influence of… Radiohead.

Hear for yourself. Annie-Dog is featured on our Best New Indie Playlist.

French Indie pop icon Christine and the Queens is already in our top 10 of the last decade.  Their latest rentrer chez moi is the ideal international crossover.  The seductive sultry beat paired with her emotive vocal gives us chills.  It’s both sensual and heartfelt in a way that words could never tell.

Not that there aren’t any words, we just don’t speak French.  Despite that we indulge in non English speaking titles enthusiastically.  For us it offers an additional cinematic trait, one where the narrative is sculpted by the vibe and the emotion of the performance.  Christine and the Queens is ripe with both.  Stylistically we hear evidence of more chill cuts from The1975 mixed with the classic influence of Kate Bush. We simply adore it.

Ellie Temple – Man on the Moon

We’re all in on Ellie Temple.  The emerging indie pop songstress caught our attention with her recent Knuckles White, and we are equally in love with her new release Man on the Moon.  Both feature her intoxicating timbre.  Her voice is both lush and smoky with an exotic twang that gets under your skin.  For us it enhances everything she touches.

Man On The Moon has some fresh jive in a way that blends the auras of Maggie Rogers with the classic influence of Fleetwood Mac.  Its irresistible.

Bess Atwell – Something Now

Bess Atwell adapts convincingly on her recent Something Now.  She initially drew us in with her majestic indie folk offerings.  Something Now is truly that, a little more groovy but not how you would’ve guessed it.  The rhythm design is slightly abstract in a way that honors her rare vocal talent.  Her voice is rich with depth and gloriously dynamic.  Atwell could grace anthems or soothe you to submission.  She’s a revelation.  The latest release has us drawing fresh comparisons to Florence Welsh and Paula Cole.  Like both of them, Bess Atwell is a force behind the microphone.
