Undiscovered Gems – VV Brown, Hazel, Paolo Ruiu, NewDad

VV Brown recently floored us with her single Black British. She returns with a new buzzworthy single in advance of an upcoming LP due this fall.  Twisted is a vibe rich soulful jam.  Trip hop and R&B both have some influence on this stylistic gem.  VV Brown embraces the legacies of Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu with some of the indie R&B influence of Leon Bridgers or Frank Ocean.  Like all of them Twisted presents infectious, but only as a byproduct to the sheer conviction and passion genuinely invested in the work.

It’s more than just a song, but artistic musical soul fabric.  You can admire its brilliance, but to share it is to acknowledge its importance and take part in the cultural revolution.  The people need to know the truth.

Hazel caught our attention with her new single Lilac&Purple.  In this new found age of appreciation Hazel finds serenity in someone else’s solemn moment.  Inspired when she saw someone relaxing in their armchair in a park, she imagined the complications that compromise this simple bliss.  The mildly nostalgic retro design gives this inherent indie folk a dreamy pop feel.

Drawing influence from the work of new icon Harry Styles, we also hear stylistic evidence of Christine and the Queens and Francis and The Lights.  Like them Hazel enwraps herself within the vibe with a candid vocal prowess full of feeling and genuine emotion.  It’s that same genuine innocence that made the 80s so timeless, reimagined with a new indie pop spirit.

Paolo Ruiu returns with the luscious lofi flash of Never An Easy Way Out.  Melodically catchy and stylistically intriguing, Never An Easy Way Out is a proper hit that should captivate indie pop and indie rock fans equally.  The sonic developments show an attention to detail and a classic candid nature to match the songs nostalgic aesthetic.

This is not your cookie cutter quantized bedroom pop.  Paolo’s impeccable flare never relents.  A sure things for fans of Unknown Mortal Orchestra or early War On Drugs.  We also think it connects with new nostalgia jammers The Heavy Heavy.

NewDad – Break In

NewDad is hypnotic on their new single Break In.  The singers voice is a blend of sultry lush sex appeal and lullaby comfort.  Boasting elite melodic instincts that contrast is exhilirhating.  She embraces new breakthrough vibes known to indie pop and blends a classic dream pop aesthetic, like Beach House and Phoebe Bridgers had a love child.

The sentiment is enhanced in the vibrant companion video, featuring a slow build to quick cuts fit for a Spotify canvas but equally effective in this long format display.  We also hear an influence of The XX and Clairo.  Altogether it’s a significant breakthrough from this new buzz project.
