Undiscovered Gems – Meagre Martin, Chin Injeti, Roselit Bone, Sonny & The Sunsets

We’re reminded with the new single from Meagre Martin that it’s probably more complicated than it seems.  Please Clap might be an Artist’s anthem, but every person will relate with the emotion heard within Martin’s effective performance.

The narrative recalls every small victory and trivial occurrence equally.  From perfecting your child’s breakfast toast to dunking a corporate meeting; our need to feel worth has never been more dire.  It’s collateral from our new televised dystopia, where talent like Martin’s crosses our desk weekly.  What separates them is the search for truth, and Meagre translates it effectively on this dramatic gem.

Stylistically Please Clap recalls the works of Big Thief with the classic sensibility of Fleetwood Mac or more recently Feist.  She’ll be touring with Alt J this fall, we can’t wait to see where she ends up.

“Now that I’m safely in my 40s guess I can process some of my 20s…”.

An opening lyric that finds some irony in its delivery, as it lands with a youthful wonder from a voice that sounds yet to be battered by the perils of age.  It’s the first curious detail that pulled us in to For Better or For Worse, the new single from Chin Injeti featuring YBTB.  The vibe is enhanced by an intriguing unorthodox melody.

The composition has some unfamiliar surprise while retaining an infectious melodic brilliance.  The production between verses features a blend of chill wave and psych pop stylistic trademarks.  It bridges the gap between Dayglow and early MGMT.  Like them Chin Injeti is known for his iconic catchy nature.  He’s been releasing his own music independently, all while writing and producing for superstars like Drake, P!nk, and Dr. Dre.  Literally standing in the shadows of stars, Chin Injeti as the artist flys under the radar.  It’s only a matter of time before the truth gets out.

Roselit Bone presents a rare stylistic combination with their infectious new single Ofrenda.  So much more than rodeo country schtick, Roselit Bone erupt with retro inspired brilliance.  We hear the legacies of understated 80s alternative projects like The Waterboys within the songs dynamic arrangement.

Featuring psychedelic Tijuana Brass and a 80s Jeff Lynne style trademark acoustic guitar mix, Ofrenda reigns autonomous within the sea of recent indie breakthroughs.  If this Portland 8 piece comes through your town, don’t miss it.  The rumblings of the underground might soon break through.  Say you heard them when.

Sonny & the Sunsets caught our attention with their new single Androids.  The Bay Area based songwriter Sonny Smith keeps folk punk classic.  The energetic heavy handed acoustic guitar strumming heard on Androids rings with conviction and adds a catchy foundation.  Sonny has swagger and slacker punk flavor, recalling new icons the Violent Femmes with some updated indie sensibility.

The bare vintage mix on the vocal gives the presentation some nostalgic flavor, and the timeless “it’s alright” lyrical narrative cements that connection.  The groups reputation for trademark vintage pop flavor has won them releases through notable labels like Fat Possum and Polyvinyl.  Over a decade into their career, the underground rumblings re-emerge out of the pandemic, as Sonny looks to get the feeling back.  Androids is the fourth release this year, and it’s a great one.
