Women Of Trip Hop – JAXXEE, Combine the Victorious, Laura Misch

We lost ourselves in the intoxicating vibe permeating from Gone, the new single from JAXXEE.  This exciting debut embraces Trip Hop’s moody Bristol origins while tagging the inspiration of classic basement underground jazz lounges.  JAXXEE shines as the sultry exotic femme-de-fatale within this exotic musical trance.  It’s the kind of hypnotic sensation suitable for suspicious figures to prey on unsuspecting onlookers.  The song is the perfect mechanism for JAXXEE to cripple you within her rich seductive delivery, an affect she embraces as a foundation of her aura.  Dare we say it’s ultra sexy, suitable for slow love makers and as a closing moody burlesque highlight.  The vibe is dark and expensive and the invitation seemingly exclusive.  There’s nothing cheap about Gone.  Stylistically it bends an influence of Portishead into the realm of Adele or Billie Eilish.  It’s a testament to its chic aesthetic and pro presentation.

JAXXEE – Gone

The video (seen above) only amplifies the intention, featuring an impressive intuitive modern dance from the Artists young daughter.  There’s a bonus video too, described as “showcasing Jaxxee in her full glory as an empowered adult, celebrating strength, sensuality, and vulnerability.”  Wouldn’t you know, it’s exclusive.

Combine The Victorious – Rushes Over Me

Combine The Victorious drop a dark sultry gem with their new single Rushes Over Me.  The singers exotic seductive essences beams with mystery, an affect accentuated in the songs hazy music video.  It effectively illuminates the collective groups aura and mystique.  The instrumentation and arrangement reflect the Trip Hop aesthetic of Thievery Corporation while leaning into a darker composition relative to the underground.  It’s a cinematic urban indie appeal, with the trademark trumpet inspiring visions of gloomy rainy alleys where shady lustful agents crawl creepily.

Laura Misch has a well earned reputation as an innovative composer and musician.  Her arrangements are extensive and fittingly complex while always retaining a melodic approachability that offers her mainstream crossover potential.  Often her jazzy inclinations collide into downtempo vibes that offer Trip Hop attention.

Such is the case with her recent Listen To The Sky.

This liberating groovy dream scape is imaginative and entrancing.  Misch employs a smokey aura as her tempered vocal glues the arrangement effectively.  Between her saxophone and her voice she exudes a mystique presence that walks you through this dream world as silhuoute dancers swirl around you in tandem with the songs groovy foundation.  If Kamasi Washington and Trip Hop had a baby Listen To The Sky might be their namesake.  In that way it also connects with the dynamic jazz centric works of Thievery Corporation.  Listen to the Sky is a vibe.  We adore it.

An instrumental shout out is due for this trip hop gem. moon:and:6 and [zoethecat] caught our attention with their new single Sputnik 1957.  This groovy instrumental effectively blends the aesthetics of Trip Hop and Lofi Hip Hop with thoughtful funk jazz infused flavors.  It’s cinematic and melodically intriguing, with sonic attention offered to every contribution to give the collective work a textured sparkle.  It gives the presentation a tickling affect, as every instrument creeps under your skin.  The aesthetic recalls the works of Nightmare on Wax with some of the melodic attention akin to Vulfpeck.  For us it could draw fans from a wide scope, offering a combination of groove and intellect we find undeniable.  Check it out.
