The first folk icons were as much pillars of their cultural heritage as they were great entertainers. In that same manner Elisapie honors her own culture while presenting works that are melodically breathtaking. Her recent concepts take well known modern classics and turn them into new folk standards in the style of her native heritage.
What started as music singles has evolved with gorgeous visual companions just as striking as her musical works. Her latest Qimatsilunga (I Want To Break Free) stays true to form. Perhaps you’re familiar with the original version by Queen, but at this point it’s just a formality. Once she pulls you in the admiration grows emphatically. We’re hooked, take the bait.
If you’re looking for unassuming cover adaptations you can’t do much better than Slothrust and their version of the Ginuwine classic Pony. They reimagine this new R&B classic as an anthemic Guitar Hero ready super hit. Like the original the lyrics retain a stylistic flash. In essence the chorus gets your attention with its cheeky innuendo.
Slothrust somehow retains their Alt Rock edge. Stylistically we think they could draw a broad scope of influence in rock, appealing to both the underground and mainstream scenes . Regardless of how you rate it, you can’t deny that it’s good fun. The video adds to its polar nature from the original, and shines a light on the bands true star presence. Check it out.
Lofi beats and chill pop interject infectiously on Hold Tight, the new single from Somni. Impressively produced with a pumping affect that gives the beat inventive life, the artist honors his aesthetic with a clever music video production.
The simple process of a walk through the park and around a city block is warped by psychedelic flashing images reminiscent of a real life chemical trip. Whether it triggers a true flashback or provides some quick respite is in the eye of the beholder. No matter how you process it, you can’t deny its imaginative nature. Check it out.
Kyle T Hurley gives a Hollywood level performance in his new video The Rats Will Find You. His presence lands somewhere between doomsday soothsayer, Brandon Lee’s crouching Crow, and the Watchmen’s Rorschach. He brings mayhem to a local folk performance and rants at passers by in entertaining fashion.
The video is effective and gives truth to the narrative. It’s a testament to his gritty presence and the gorgeous cinematography and color design. We love it. Dig in here.
