Emerging Folk – Whiskerman x Kelly McFarling, Seasonal Falls, Edie Yvonne, Michael Day

Whiskerman and Kelly McFarling hit indie Americana Gold with their new single My Motor.  There’s a nostalgic reverence that tags an elusive era in rock, citing the legacies of The Band in a way most bands can’t.  Theres’s also some fair indie flair in the spirit of Dr Dog or select cuts from My Morning Jacket.  It’s a testament to both the studied musicianship and the singers genuine vocal delivery, one that feels candid and in the moment much like those analog vinyl printed classics.  We can dig it.

Seasonal Falls – Happy Dayz

Seasonal Falls delicately removes the makeup on society’s failures on their new single Happy Dayz.  We adore the lyrical contrast and how it teases the soothing melodic mood of the composition.  Impactful references of escapism illuminate how popular trends delay accountability.  It cleverly cites the institutions that profit off our desired distraction.  From big Pharma to Google the writer reflects Orwellian’s warning of new metaphorical mass opiums.

Immediately addictive, the song offers a chance for community and solidarity in the form of a bizarre in concert sing along, one that feels fun compared to the angry public protests preferred by progressive cultural revolutionaries.  The musical essence will draw fair comparisons to Sufjan Stevens, who though often abstract also has notably dark direct moments like on his treasured ode to John Wayne Gacy Jr.  Seasonal Falls embrace that same ironic delivery.  Happy Dayz are surely fading if we don’t take heed to the underlying message.

Edie Yvonne updates a lurking classic with her dreamy version of No Rain.  The iconic Blind Melon hit flys under the radar, partly due to the bands unfortunate short life span and partly to the the challenge of matching their singers scorching high delivery.  Edie gives the song new life and adapts it in a way thats more approachable and easier to sing along too.  She brings refreshing candid sultry urban touch to this treasured classic.

The band updates the vibe with a chill adapted groove. It suits the songs instinctually dreamy flowing affect.  Her 10th single of 2023, Yvonne wraps up the year on a revealing note, one that bears her influences while showing how she might adapt a set of classics.  We think she’s lovely.

Michael Day – Nan & Pop’s house’

Michael Day immortalizes his beautiful upbringing in the gorgeous video for his new single Nan and Pop’s House.  Mirroring the songs sentimental reflections, the video finds the artist in memorable recollection while elegantly charting old home videos from his Grandparents house.  It’s a clever idea and a tear jerking tribute, one that connects with a new generation of young adults transitioning into that period of life when our elders start passing.

On its own merit the song conjures memories with a stimulating guiding lyrical framework.  The video convincingly amplifies that intention.  Stylistically this songwriter based indie folk with its delicate trumpet and subtle groove connects with some of the works known to Andrew Bird and Iron & Wine.  We find it delightful.
