Best New Indie – Almost Twins, Church Chords, Marching Band

The sonic textures of Mosaics create a hypnotic sound print.  The new single from Almost Twins has rare tonal qualities.  They accentuate the songs exotic essence, further illuminated by abstract brass interruptions as an intruding saxophone breaks into this indie space.  The arrangement travels deeper into world music realms with the progressive mid song movement.

The German project embraces its hypnotic tendencies, dipping you deeper into the throes of this inspiring dream state.  Stylistically we hear similarities to Jose Gonzalez and his work with the group Junip.  It’s an intriguing easy listen, one that will please intellectual music lovers and the breezy bypasser equally.

Church Chords – Alone Under Water

Indie darling Kristen Slipp continues a tradition of excellence, most recently with her involvement with Church Chords and their new single Alone Under The Water.  We’ve adored Slipps work with Dirty Projectors and then Mmeadows.  For us, everything she touches turns to gold.  Likewise, her collab with the underground project Church Chords enjoys a similar affect.

The under the radar indie influencer who leads Church Chords enlists some notable collaborators.  His name is Stephen Bueno, and he rose out of the indie haven that is Philadelphia and into the hearts of Indies creative sweethearts due to his penchant for organizing sessions that promote the experimental and spontaneous, often referred to as improv.

With Alone Under The Water his experimental tendencies find commercial potential without losing their abstract jazz inspired integrity.  Take away the voice and its a loose format lofi trending moody soundtrack.  It’s not a slight, but a testament to Slipps ability.  She molds into the musics framework elegantly, honoring its intention while adding some verbal character.  We simply adore it.

Marching Band – Talk To Me

An encouraging snare pumps steady at the onset of Talk To Me, the new single from the appropriately monikered Swedish band Marching Band.  The snare keeps a rigid formation for the rest of the band to lock into, as an interjecting bright guitar adapts between playfully.  As the composition progresses the players take turns breaking out of formation with subtle riffs that add to the catchy appeal.

A measured vocal lands with magnetic precision.  Co-written by Peter Morén Of Peter Björn and John, Talk To Me shares in that projects trademark charm, blending it with an affect familiar to Okkerville River’s Down The Deep River.  It’s absolutely anthemic and begging for an interpretive dance session.
