Hip Hop Discovery – Denisse Takes, HELRZR, D.W. The Bay Street Boy, Pavy, Retro Kid x Little Simz

Collectively infectious Denisse Takes claims her throne with their new single Break.  From the jump she asserts this is a serious female rap anthem. More than just a catchy idea, Denisse Takes is a revelation regardless of orientation.  It’s one of the most effective boom bap lyrical releases we’ve heard in years.  She’s competing with the legacy of the WuTang and Griselda, honoring Latifah and Salt-N-Pepa while ascending as the savior they hoped to inspire.

Denisse Takes is lucid and vivid in how she describes her interactions within the rap community.  Her reflections are impactful, and her sex appeal is a testament of her strength and how she flaunts her abilities.  She’s critical of other cheap female rappers without presenting resentful.  This is more about claiming her truth, a reality which has served her righteous.  This should be a hip hop hit but Denisse Takes fly’s under the radar cause you didn’t push play.  Do better.

Lots of crazy coming from this Philly HELRZR hip hop collective.  A string of thematic anthems caught out attention last year, and most recently their emphatic DAMN (Do It Again) has us tuned in to their eccentric madness.  From the classic call and response to the impressive live instrumentation HELRZR brings boom bap back to the party in a way that cites the legacies of Cyprus Hill and Beastie Boys.  They add flashes of lyrical genius while embracing magnetic personas convincingly.  That lyrical flash has won them some comparisons to MF Doom and JPEG Mafia within the blog community, while their online presence remains elusive due to their underground aesthetic.

The new single is a jam that resonates with the impact of Onyx and his trademark SLAM.  It’s just a matter of time before we hear this jawn on the big screen.  See what the hype is about.

D.W. The Bay Street Boy – Masha Allah

“Good kids die young in the city I’m from.”  D.W. The Bay Street Boy reigns poetic on their recent Masha Allah.  This modern urban rap epic unravels like a Shakespeare tragedy.  The imagery is cinematic while rhyme and alliterations share in the musicality of the expressive beat and production.

From the annals of black spirituals voices mourn prophetically, citing the atrocity of how modern pop culture might dishonor historical struggles. With this collective post though, an abundance of hope in the rap community.  You can’t deny it, you just have to dig deeper.

Masha Allah is on our Hip Hop Anthems Playlist.

Pavy knows that FaceTime Is Dangerous.  The theme of his new single is righteously entertaining.  “5 hours later we be hanging up.”  The new Orwellian opium of internet connection enwraps you while the world moves on without you.

The new single is catchy much like the attention this illuminated screen offers you.  We can all relate, and Pavy finds some thematic treasure right in the palm of our everyday reality.  We dig that in the moment genius.  He cites J Cole as an influence, we also hear the legacy of Dre.  We dig it.

Hear Pavy on our Hip Hop Anthems playlist.

It’s not on Spotify due to licensing issues, but a Soundcloud shout out is due to Retro Kid and their remix of the Little Simz single SIMBI.  The stylistic brilliance and innovative appeal are extra fresh.  Check it out and if you’re on Soundcloud hook them up!
