Emerging Folk – Lila Holler, Zoe Boekbinder, Hello Emerson, Abigail Lapell

Lila Holler enwrapped us in the sanctity of AmeliaHoller’s vocal and production talents are incredible, and the song has a cinematic progressive arrangement.  Holler makes great use of her abilities, adding lush backing vocals and using the percussion design to amplify the drama.

The lyrics are brilliant.  At the cusp of romance Holler is buried beneath the peril of infatuation.  There’s an inclination to try to control every detail of this romance, it adds a dark haunting reverence to this tale despite its good intentions.  It’s that contrast that makes Amelia a great love song, with a complicated subplot that begs for interpretation.  Gorgeously produced it effectively bridges the gap between Clairo and Lizzy McAlpine.  We find it delightful.

Full of conviction and blessed with a rare rich timbre, Zoe Boekbinder is magnetic on their recent Mycelium.  An anthemic composition gets blessed with a signature unorthodox pump.  It adds an abstract swagger that honors Zoe’s own unique nature.  Mycelium builds but never erupts.  In that way it avoids cliche, existing like a sound print and totally giving itself to a vibe.

Stylistically we hear evidence of Sharon Van Etten and Feist.  It’s a testament to Boekbinder’s indie heart, and it reflects our convictions that indie is a style in its own right.  It’s a musical aura in which Mycelium very much exists.  We can’t get enough of it.

Hello Emerson – To Keep Him Here

Hello Emerson drops a heartfelt gem with their new single To Keep Him Here.  A relaxing Sunday morning keepsake, To Keep Him Here helps to recollect how you got there and what’s left to take care.  It’s a coming of age sad song for the heavy hearts.

Stylistically we hear the classic influence of Neil Young with an updated indie sensibility akin to slower numbers known to Wilco, My Morning Jacket, and Delta Spirit.  The video is something special too.  It amplifies the bands small town roots, with overhead shots that illustrate suburbias grid like design.  Don’t skip the vid and send the song to a friend who needs it.

Abigail Lapell – Rattlesnake

Abigail Lapell conjures the spirits with a convincing church studio performance for her song Rattlesnake.  The natural reverberated reflections add an authentic reverence as Abigail channels the aura of vintage Americana.

It’s that blend of isle ballads, spirituals, and gospel that ignited the North America’s first signature compositions.  Lapell and her band inject some new indie influence to adapt these vibe fresh.  We simply adore it.
