Music Videos We Love – Bill Baird, Cheap Wedding, Pocketboy Solid, Girlfriends and Boyfriends, MANJA

The new electric soundtrack of our lives.  That’s how we felt taking in the sights and sounds of Couch Olympics, the new single from Bill Baird.  There’s some rare nostalgia here in how Baird and his team cite classic cinema electric montages and an influence of Roxy Music and Brian Eno.

The video is a journey worthy of a full screen adaptation.  There are a lot of stories to tell here, and the narrative does well to piece them together without dialog.  Where are they?  Why are they there?  Where did they come from?  It’s all a bit of a mystery, but one things for certain.  They’re living life on the right terms.  Get lost in Couch Olympics.

Cheap Wedding tests her limits in the video for her new single Fill That Void. The multi dimensional artist honors her trip hop influences in both sight and sound.  Her vibe is of another dimension while the sounds are abstract within a downtempo dance beat design.

It’s melodically dark within an energetic construct.  It’s not melancholy, rather the aura reflects a discontented nihilistic nature despite wanting pleasure so hopelessly.  The video honors that complexity.  Is this hell, or is this some bizarre twisted fantasy?  You decide.  Fill That Void

Blending the eccentric nature of Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse with the piano influence of Ben Folds is enough to catch our attention but Pocketboy Solid offer so much more in the video for their single Close Encounters of the Richard Kind

The video reflects the songs performance and inspired lyrics in a way thats imaginative and exciting.  We love this energy and how its embraced in the video.  Altogether it’s an indie triumph.  We were captivated from start to finish.  It features some Spike Jonze level insanity and without giving away too much let’s just say there are hand puppets and choreography.  Okay that should be enough to get you to press play but oh it’s so much more.  Give this dude an Oscar, he’s got it!

It’s that song you know you’ve heard before but you can’t quite place the author.  His name is Bruce Cockburn (pronounced Co-burn!), and the tune is Lovers in a Dangerous Time.  The song is an underground gem that’s been significantly covered in every decade since its debut.

Girlfriends and Boyfriends honor that legacy and add an inspired visual dystopian romance to the mix courtesy of an A+ music video.  They update the tune too, leaning into its 80s alternative punk potential.  The characters in the video feel equally caught between the thrill of counter culture and the lure of celebrity.  Damn this video is fun and the stars within share a chemistry worthy of a feature film.  Jump in.

Vibrant colour is at the essence of MANJA.  That sentiment is effectively displayed in the video for their new single MNSF.  This bizarre futuristic soiree is equal parts Star Wars and The 5th Element.  It’s slightly creep with its creatures embracing their sexual nature in a way that reflects classic B movies.  It’s futuristic cultish fun for the sci fi cosplay fan, it’s also a catchy jam in the spirit of Passion Pit or classic MGMT.  These geeks get freaky. Check it out.
