Emerging Folk – Talia Schlanger, Kyle Andrews, Luna Keller, Cloe Wilder

Dreams are complicated.  Talia Schlanger knows this well.  For a short while Schlanger was near the forefront of the indie music world, but not as an artist. She became a household name when she became the replacement for radio legend David Dye on NPR syndicated program The World Cafe.  It was a short stint, and though the details aren’t completely clear, it appears Schlanger walked away from that treasured seat to reprise her own career in music.

To some, that might seem like insanity.  But Schlanger didn’t get that job by being the Queen of convention.  Her insight into the artists journey and how she connects with that existential plight served her interviews well.  With songs like her new single Narrow Bridge she reasserts her taste for good music reaches beyond critique. She’s got her own rare classic touch, bridging the realms of Joni Mitchell with and indie sensibility akin to Jeff Buckley or Kathleen Edwards.  It’s just one piece of her new album Grace For The Going, a 9 song artistic reclamation worthy of her own feature segment.

Kyle Andrews drops a heartfelt dustbowl anthem.  The new single Old Fashioned adapts a melancholy Americana vibe with indie reverence.  The legacy of Neil Young and Graham Parsons collides with artists like Phosphorescent and Dr Dog.  Andrew’s shares in Phosphorescent’s broken delivery, with his own trademark melodic scratch.  It offers the lyrical context some genuine hurt.

Give us all the unavoidable anguish.  It helps you to feel something when they’re feeling something, conjured through your speaker and piercing your needy heart. There’s nothing safe about this vocal performance, and we love that!  Old Fashioned is full of soul, must like the vintage classics.

Luna Keller – Not Ready

Luna Keller strikes gold on her convincing new single Not Ready.  A highlight in a string of recent thematic releases, Not Ready represents Chapter VI of her Oceans Inside of Me project, an album paired with a video series that spans a realm of complicated emotions with metaphorically rich imagery.

True to form, Not Ready is beautifully produced and shines her vocal talents in a gorgeous light.  Beyond the collective project, it’s also a fine stand alone single with a hypnotic hook that grabs you for a second listen.

Keller is catching on, winning over a dedicated audience based on her prolific touch and dynamic creative touch.  We’re big fans.  Check out the video and check out her expansive catalog.

Cloe Wilder ft NICOLOSI – Afterglow

Cloe Wilder and NICOLOSI caught our attention with their collaboration Afterglow.  The charm of this duet rests on the polarities of their delivery.  The contrast of his boomy bass and her lush whispery style amplify the songs cinematic nature.  Their voices compliment each other in a way that adds conjured character to the musical conversation, illuminating your vision of their personalities and role within the relationship.

A gorgeous modern indie folk atmospheric vibe enhances the dreamy affect.  Afterglow is a sure thing for fans of Bon Iver, Gracie Abrams, and even Taylor Swift.
