Best New Indie – Raelle, Blood Family Reunion, 22° Halo, Maria Rabbit

Sultry soul collides with groovy psych pop on Pressure, the infectious breakthrough single from Raelle.  Dressed differently Pressure could adapt like a retro throwback in the spirit of Amy Winehouse. Raelle reaches beyond vintage soul with a production style that reflects an expressive modern alternative R&B electro influence.

Raelle embraces her trippy sonic instincts, allowing some psychedelia to pierce through in a way that’s exhilarating.  The mood is comforting, reimagining the idea of a Pressure complex in a way that’s liberating.  The songs groovy nature adds to its feel good intention. Hear for yourself.

Pressure is feared on our Best New Indie Playlist

Blood Family Reunion caught our attention with their new single Distant Mirror.  The group embraces their dreamy shoegaze influences while adapting inspirations from post punk and post rock into that vibe.  The result is rhythmically intricate, with rich layers evolving within harmonious overtones, with the vocal part ultimately tying the arrangement together.

Combined with the female singers moody presence, we hear a semblance of The Weather Station blended with immersive shoegaze acts like Pale Saints. We also hear similarities with the drum part to the works of early early Polica.  We can dig it.

22° Halo – Bird Sanctuary

Classic psych folk pop and a cool kid aesthetic blend intriguingly on Bird Sanctuary, the new single from 22° Halo.  It’s a rare duet, one where the voices mirror each other in affect but contrast each other in timbre.

The guitar parts attention to melody is calculated and effective, with catchy riffs that get under your skin and into your head space.  That kind of vibrant melodic guitar playing recalls an influence of Kurt Vile or Far Caspian, with the playful vocal reflecting projects like The Shins, Magnetic Fields, and more classically Nico.  We adore it.

Maria Rabbit – Springtime in Kyoto

Maria Rabbit is an immensely talented young emerging indie pop singer. Her creative spirit and the attention she brings to her melodies is worthy of a prodigy designation. Her music is a collaboration between herself, her cousin, and her Father who helps write the lyrics.

Maria herself is involved in the writing and the creative direction. Her voice is incredibly effective within a modern indie pop vibe, and the quality of her music extends beyond novelty.  The new single Springtime In Kyoto reiterates the potential.  For us it recalls the imaginative works known to Remi Wolf and Biig Piig.  In tandem with their works, Maria Rabbit’s composition are slightly abstract but melodically infectious. Check it out.
