Trip Hop Discovery – Ani After Death, Offworld Narcotics, Dane Diamond

Ani After Death is special.  Her new single Father Says (Remix) is a journey.  The first movement embraces trip hop’s lofi aesthetic.  As the song progresses it evolves with some dramatic indie pop style flare.

The narrative is intriguing, and the various vocal chains offer cinematic brilliance.  Her creative genius really shines through the imaginative lyrics.  In that way it connects wtih artists like Bjork, Kate Bush, and Mitski.

Offworld Narcotics – Mariana

Offworld Narcotics sets the mood on their new song Mariana.  The new single is all about a vibe and they cement it effectively.  The music swirls around a seductive groove as the singer drips poetry with sultry affect.  Every lyric escapes soft from her lips as the hypnotic atmospheric production engulfs you like quicksand.

Once you are fully immersed the band erupts devilishly, transversing into unexpected psych rock realms that challenge the true trip hop aesthetic.  We’re cool with it.  We appreciate the ascent of this influence and how it adapts an inspiration of Thievery Corporation or Zero 7 and blends it with bands like Khruanghbin or dare we say King Gizzard.  Check it out.

Dane Diamond – Cali Choir

Dane Diamond effectively embraces an influence of classic trip hop and makes it their own on the new single Cali Choir.  The music has the dark melodic essence familiar to Massive Attack with some of the moody tension familair to Portishead.

There’s also some rock influence mixed in, evident by the riff attentive guitar that charts the melodic range.  It’s calculated and it works in tandem with the expansive moving parts, all which work to create a exciting collective arrangement.
