Emerging Folk – Leila Dandan, Scott Elliott Ferreter, Moira Smiley, Hollerhead

Leila Dandan captures bliss on her new single my room’s a mess.  The song evolves like an existential victory.  The arrangement adapts in tandem with this moment of personal reclamation.  The artistic brilliance mirrors this flash of rebellious freedom.

It’s inspiring, ‘cause we all know that to make time for these things some kind of convention likely needs to be abandoned.  Why?  Cause our new social conundrums have us jammed from first light to no light.  Claim you’re now with Leila as your guide.  Maybe she did admit she’s insane, and maybe we like it.  Stylistically she bridges the gap between Phoebe Bridgers, Lord Huron, and Fleet Foxes.  We’re into it.

Scott Elliott Ferreter doesn’t mince influence on his inspired Shivering Light.  There’s a comfort to his revelation, one that finds solace in the trials that walked him to this payoff.  Featuring M’Gilvry Allen and MaMuse, Shivering Light is a discovery Ferreter intended to share with his musical community.

Like a messenger whose rhetoric is founded in good will, Shivering Light always feels good.  Beyond its essence the intention is honored with a creative arrangement that recalls projects like Iron & Wine and Glen Hansard.  Like his light, the artists is careful to offer something stylistically rich and beautiful.  Take care.

We were entranced by the cinematic reverence Moira Smiley brought to her version of Go Dig My Grave, originally written by Jean RitchieSmiley’s version examines the songs complicated spiritual roots.  Whereas true folk music has been relegated to contemporary purgatory, Smiley reminds us that spirituals often immortalize an eery cultural fabric.

In collaboration with Merrill G aka Tune-Yards, this version is appropriately abstract and intended to warp a common melodic temperament into a dark obscure revelation.  Stylistically we also hear a semblance of Johnny Greenwood’s interpretations offered on the There Will Be Blood Soundtrack.  And there will be.  Dig it.

Hollerhead is full of Americana Country Soul.  It’s fitting consider the moniker. Their new single Never Gonna Leave You is convincing.   We hear a combination of pure passion and the wear of dues that have been paid.

The sentiment lands heartfelt.  In response you start to imagine the experience that inspired this narrative.  Initially imagine, it begins to conjure your own experience.  After all, everyone knows long term loving ain’t easy.  Stylistically it’s a sure thing for fans of Jason Isbell and Drive By Truckers.  Hear for yourself.
