Retro Pop Revival – Velgas, FREND, MODERNS, Vague Lanes

We were drawn into the imaginative intro at the onset of Aftershock, the new single from Velgas feat Morticio.  We’re a sucker for this kind of deep metaphysical synth pop feel.  It recalls an affect familiar to Peter Gabriel or more recently Christine and the Queens.

Like them, Velgas conjures an essence of the cosmos in a way that universally nostalgic.  It’s a vibe that breaks the language barrier.  Hear for yourself.

FREND caught our attention with their new single Beautiful Stranger (Beautiful World).  Both post punk and new wave have a stake in this vibe.  They update the nostalgic appeal with a modern synth pop sensibility.  It’s heard in the punchy drums and vibrant presence of dominant bass synth.

Elegantly produced, it’s also a sweet jam.  Stylistically the composition finds the middle ground between Tubeway Army and Human League.  It’s a testament to the playful synth leads and moody melodic appeal.  We love it.

We dig the retro art pop feel heard on Romance, the new single from MODERNS.  The dark dramatic intro collides intriguingly against the pseudo sensual pop essence of the song.  It’s a gorgeous retro pop throwback.

We hear an influence of Kate Bush or Eurythmics with some modern indie inspiration in the vein of Lo Moon.  It’s a testament to the both the guitar part and the singers nostalgia brilliance.  She’s the songs definitive attraction, with a vocal part strong enough to hang with some of the best in synthwave.

We love the dark dramatic statement heard on Heptahedron, the new single from Vague Lanes.  The aggressive smack of the snare is its first magnetic pull.  The atmospheric churn adds a chaotic underlayer, one that evolves harmoniously in a wade of overtones.

Every progression on the surface fights above the swallow of the underlayer, as the vocal rises like the songs guiding specter.  It’s a sweet dark anthem, one that should connect with synth pop and gothic fans alike.  Stylistically we think it’s a sure thing for fans of Korine or The Cult.
