Best New Indie – alayna, The Bankes Brothers, Late Aster, JEEN

There’s something different about Softly, the new single from alayna. Her lush emotive vocal has shades of Sade while the opening cadence has a semblence of modern pop. But its her quivering vibrato we won’t soon forget. It keeps you tapped into this musical moment to its final motion. We fell for softly and the voice of this emerging gem. Don’t sleep on the sensual soulful bliss that is Alayna.

The Bankes Brothers are convincing on their new single Waited All Night. Nostalgic memories get illuminated courtesy of the time stamped guitar tone. The singer has familiar twang in the spirit of Nathaniel Rateliff, but we wouldn’t call this derivative. Waited All Night stands strong on its own two feet while wearing some influences stlylishly. We love it.

Set the controls for the heart of the kaleidescope and get lost in Ctrl-F Discipline, the new single from Late Aster. A simple arrangement feels elusive as the lofi recording genius paints and plots his way around a series of sample like girations elegantly. The main voice acts like a spiritual guide within this unique blend. Stylistically we think it connects with artists like James Blake and Dirty Projectors.

JEEN caught our attention with her new single Look What You Did. There’s a mischievous temperament wrapped in an attitude filled infectious pop package. It evolves and whiplashes intriguingly. Stylistically its a sure thing for fans of Wet Leg and Geese. We think its hot.
